Damn near impossible to turn off

Today was the first day that I really had used my iPod away from home. I was showing it to a few people, and therefore constantly turning it on and off. Problem is, 95% of the time, holding down Play/Pause or hitting the Sleep button didn't turn it off. You have to sit there, and about the 8 or 9th try, it will turn off.

Anyone else have these problems?

I do, but it sometimes will take upwards of a minute of frantic Play/Pause holding and Sleep before it does anything. The menus navigate just fine

is it because you are playing a video and then you hold play to turn it off or if you are watching a video then hit menu a few times to back out of it and then hold play to make it sleep? If so, that is true that the ipod doesnt turn off usually if there is a video playing so you need to get a song playing and then turn it off.

This happens during anything. Sometimes a song is playing, sometimes a movie is playing, and sometimes nothing is playing. All my attempts have been by backing out to the Main Menu and turning it off from there

I have that same problem with mine. How does your play button work otherwise?

The play button works just fine, as far as I know. I don't think that's the problem though, since the Sleep option on the Main Menu doesn't work either.

Woah, I was playing with it today, not using the Sleep option, but I just kept redoing the Play/Pause button and it always works on the 3rd time too!

This has to be a semi-mass defect, if ours both always turn off on the third try

Found this forum googling this very problem. A reset worked for me, all the other poking/waiting combos did nothing. This MUST be a widespread issue.

Mine has been doing thing, people looking at it and stuff and wonder why it won't turn off. But just making sure a video isn't playing and putting it on hold then away and letting it go to sleep on it's own is all I do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it's kind of annoying.
