Not letting me manually manage songs

Please choose appropriate forum for this topic thanks.

I have a 4G iPod mini which has been working fine for 12 months....up until yesterday.
What happenned yesterday is that my brother received an iPod for Christmas and decided he wanted all my music. He registered his iPod with my computer and downloaded all my music. When my ipod was reconnected it needed to be re-registered with my computer, which completely wiped all my files off my ipod !

Subsequently, when connecting to i-Tunes it said there wasn't enough space on my ipod to transfer all files so it created a folder with a selection of random songs which automatically updates every time I connect.

I have tried changing the settings to manually manage songs and playlists in the preferences sections, however, everytime I re-enter iTunes it has reset itself to automatic syncing (instead of staying on manual) so I am unable to delete or add any music or create any new playlists on my iPod. This is frustrating as I have always managed my songs manually and for some reason now it is not giving me the option. Even when I change the preferences to "update selected playlists only", it always reverts to autosynching with "Susan's ipod selection" every time I reconnect my ipod.

I thought about updating or restoring my ipod software to see if it might help but I just get the "can't mount iPod" when I do that.

Why is this happenning? Is it an iTunes problem (I recently downloaded iTunes update) or iPod mini problem?

Any help would be appreciated as I have already wasted many hours on this problem!

I managed to fix my own problem.

Once I was able to get past the "can't mount ipod" problem and run the program to restore my ipod, my problem was fixed. To do this I needed to put my ipod first into disk mode (press and hold down the menu and select buttons until apple logo appears, and then hold down the fast forward and rewind buttons). Then I able to successfully mount the ipod and run the updater program. This has fixed my problems with iTunes and everything is running properly again.
