i dont think it will really scratch up the back of your ipod, but i wouldn't recommend the ipod sock. i dont think they look very good, for one, but thats opinion. you have to fish the ipod out of the sock to change the music, which might result in dropping the thing.
heres a tip which might serve as a temporary solution: take two VERY SOFT terrycloth wristbands and slid them on top of your ipod, next to each other, adjusting as nescessary. this allows cusioning and scratch protection, and you can slid the bands up and down so you can see the screen or use the touch pad, until you can get a permanent solution |

Well, iPod socks are hardly smooth.
Judging from my 4G, it leaves very very fainy hairline scratches. Vertical ones when I took the sock off and on. But it didn't seem to protect the back, don't know how they appeared. Maybe I have knifes in my pockets or something. |

I want a Ipod Sock for my Ipod but I dont want hair-line scratches. Is there a material I can line the sock with for protection?

It doesn't matter what you use to protect your iPod. It will get scratched. Scratches happen, and not just to the iPod. It's a fact of life.

I am planning to use an ipod sock for my new 5G 30GB and i hope that it can protect it from most scratches. I know there will be some minor scratches but can anyone who has used this method tell me how it is working for them?

The case that came with my video Ipod has not causes a single scratch. I have no idea what the original poster is talking about.

I am a huge fan of the sock type iPod cases, and I actually have a set of the Apple ones. They let me take out my iPod whenever I want, which is important for me (why buy something that looks nice to keep it in a case permanently?).
I recently sold my 20GB Color and intend to purchase a new 5G, but I will not be using the Apple socks for it. In my opinion, the material they're made of is not soft enough for the iPod. It does leave tiny hairline scratches up the iPod where it's pulled on and off. They are barely visible, but enough to annoy me. I will probably order a FabriX or Foofpod sock type case instead, as they use a softer lining material.

I made my own iPod sock/satchel out of a wool sock (for style), a microfleece sock (for a soft lining) and a strap. All it takes is a very small amount of sewing experience and a bit of common sense. Plus, your iPod sock/case/purse will be unique and give you a neat sense of accomplishment. Maybe I'll post pictures later.
