Is it worth getting the extended warranty?

I am about to buy a new iPod (probably the 60GB 5th Gen) and am wondering whether I need to get the retail store's extended warranty for the iPod. Apple only provide a warranty of 12 months but if something happens after the first 6 months the consumer has to pay the shipping and handling. Is it worth paying the addition $80 for a 2 year warranty? The store says there are no questions if it doesn't look damaged or 'went for a swim', just a straight replacement. Anyone?

read my previous posts about finding out who (tech support, customer support) are the ones who handle the warranty issues, not just the salesperson.

otherwise, there are many threads, some probably with the EXACT same title like yours

I heard a rumour that the earphones are the first to go... particularly the left earphone. Just got back from my cousin's who bought a mini and guess which earphone has gone after just 4 months... the left!

I don't know. You get your 1 year guarantee, and that's pretty damn good; my 4g monochrome 40gb was replaced with no hassle at all when it went wrong. After that . . . well, a new hard drive for it costs £140. The two-year warranty was expensive enough that I'm prepared to take it on the chin if this one goes wrong in the next year and upgrade to a 5g.

I believe you have to send the earphones to Apple for a replacement (if you didn't take the additional warranty from the place you purchased the iPod. But it depends on the terms and conditions of the warranty). And "Yes", you have to pay for postage.

Regarding earphones I find it hard to believe that this many pairs have a bad left problem how are all of you taking them out of your ears? I could see an ear going out quickly if you were yanking them out by the cords but thats really the only way it would make sense

Nope, it is a poor technical design. Ironically, I have been asking around about the iPods at a few retail stores to see how the stories compare and consistently I have heard about the left ear piece losing sound quality or sound completely... very strange!
