Question Video Resolution Questions

I've got some questions about the new iPod's Video Resolution.

From what I've heard, the maximum quality (read:resolution) possible on the iPod is 512x384, MPEG-4 and up to 2.5MBps. Now, can someone try that resoluton on their iPod? If it does work, that's great, but according to the ArsTechnica review, the chip inside can support up to "MPEG-4 VGA", which is 640x480.

I don't want to encode all of my videos for the new iPod and then have to re-encode when a firmware update is released. Can someone reccomend a solution?

the H.264 resolution isnt actually that bad - i watched it on a 32inch tv and it was very watchable - let alone watching it on the computer or the tiny ipod screen.

if you really want high quality video if tv playback - i need to do some experiements before i can give you my proper opinion

I thought it was limited to 1.5mbps. I'll have to try 2.5....

I encoded The Hulk at 640x360 @ 1.5mbps and watched it on my 32" Plasma and it looked great. No artifacts that I could see (and I thought I would). The file size was 1.6gb so since that looks okay, I'm not sure I'd want to go higher...

Resolution = 320x240, 640x480, etc.

I'm encoding TV shows from DVDs to 512x384, 1.2mbps, MPEG-4. Is it possible to do a higher 4:3 resolution?

From what I read before, the maximum resolutions for the iPod are:

720 x 304 - 2.35:1
624 x 336 - 1.85:1
624 x 352 - 16:9
512 x 384 - 4:3

Is this the absolute highest resolution?
