You can download itunes for Windows free at apple.com/itunes but beware that it can rename every single mp3 on your system if you customise the settings to point to your mp3 folder (sigh!). There's a full listing of ipod windows software on this post: http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthr...&threadid=2286 - have a browse through the "ipod windows > software" forum for more advice

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to make simple playlists/smartlists, and your music collection is smaller than what's on your ipod and well tagged, Itunes is great. It's relatively easy to use.

If you have a huge music collection, and want/need it highly organized, or need to do a bunch of tag/file cleanup, and you're relatively experienced with a computer, MC9 would be the way to go. I prefer MC9--I'm at the point that I would have a hard time managing my music collection without it--but Itunes is a nice program, much better than mmjb.

try mc9 first (see the link to the 30-day trial) use it a week or so just to really get used to it and then try iTunes to see if your need aac support more (currently only supported properly by iTunes) or prefer having complex smartlist support (mc9)...
