Computer charges, but does not recognize, iPod?

Very confusing.

I've been doing a lot of updating to my iPod recently (a 4G 20GB) - adding songs constantly. Because of this, I decided to spend an entire night downloading iTunes 6 (dial-up, ugh), since I was only on something like v4 or similar. That night I downloaded a Podcast and uploaded it to my iPod and listened to it...it worked perfectly.

Happy that this had happened, I went to Barnes and Noble the next day and bought three CDs from the music section. I was pretty excited to add this new music because I had been wanting it for a long time. I put the music on the computer and plugged my iPod in. And waited.

Nothing happened. The iPod didn't update itself, the computer didn't recognize it (my computer shoots up a bubble about a high speed USB device plugged into a slow USB) - in fact, the only thing it did was charge the iPod.

I went through my manual for help - restarted my computer (my computer may be the problem - I've had problems signing off recently...) and then even tried to reset my iPod (for some reason it didn't do it...it simply stayed on the main menu...).

So I have no clue - so I'm asking for help.

What's wrong? Is there any way to fix it?

I'd really like to have my iPod back to how it was.

-A final note: my iPod HASN'T been updated (the iPod software or whatever it is) because my computer is so slow. Could this contribute?

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

After Little Nomad Zen Xtra was tucked in by his mother (Nomad Zen), he said to her, "Mommy, I wanna grow up to be an iPod!"

His mother replied, "Baby, that's not possible. That is, unless your pull a Michael Jackson."
