iPod won't charge when plugged into computer

Hey guys, I have a problem. My iPod battery is almost dead so I plugged it into my Powerbook to charge while I was using the computer. The iPod turns on, the apple logo appears, then the thing shuts off. All this happens while the computer and iPod are connected. Shouldn't the iPod start charging? It charges fine when I plug it into the AC, so I did that. After it charged for a while (about 3/4 of the battery meter was full afterwards), I plugged it back into the computer to delete some songs from my iPod. After about 30 minutes the iPod turned off again and I got an error message on the computer for inappropriately disconnecting the device.

First off, why won't it charge when its plugged into the computer?

And second, why did the battery die in half an hour when it was plugged in?

3G iPod 20 gb and I'm connecting it with the USB connector cord

nevermind I figured it out iPods only charge through firewire, not USB

When I plug my iPod into my computer via the white cord that came with it, it will show up in iTunes but will not show the lightning bolt that it is charging. I can continuously unplug and replug in and the lightning bolt will appear for a few seconds, then go away. What is going on?
