Red face iPod classic hard drive issue.

I bought my iPod classic last Wednesday, and last night I was browsing photos and after I stopped, the hard drive spun down normally, but at the end (3 seconds from when it accessed the files) I heard a squeaking / almost grinding sound as the disk came to a halt. It happens every time I highlight a different photo folder. Will Apple replace this? In order to hear the sound it has to be close to your ear in a relatively quiet environment. Thanks for any input.

The disk makes a noise when highlighting different folders because it's accessing information. The "clicking" sounds are normal. I don't know what you mean by "Squeeky" and "grinding", because that should definitely not be the case. Clicking and whirring are the sounds that are normal.

I'm not sure if you have a problem or if you're just worried about the normal hard drive noises. The sounds when moving between are definitely normal, but the kind of sounds is the problem. Maybe see if you can go to an Apple store or see if a friend has a classic you can listen to.

I know the clicking and whirring noises are normal, I've had that with the 2 hard drive based players I had before. But this is different. After the whirring becomes inaudible, is when the grinding/squeaking noise occurs. It only lasts about a half-second but it's like the disk catches on something.

If there's any doubts, go back to where you bought it from and ask for a replacement. Most places offer 14 or 30 day policies, you should be in good shape.
