iTunes stuck on Syncing - hangs on "Updating Files - Preparing to Update"

iTunes version:12.5.5.5
iPhone 7 256GB, iOS version: 10.2.1

I'm having issues with adding songs to my iPhone because the syncing basically hangs whenever I try adding a song to my library. Every time I drag a song, it says "Updating Files on *name of my Phone* - Preparing to Update". I even let it go for literally 15 minutes (JUST to see if it is a timing thing, but it's not). When I look on the music section on the phone via iTunes, the file is there, only grayed out with a dashed-line circle next to it (presumably because it's still trying to sync).

I tried restarting the phone, iTunes, and my computer with no success. It was working fine this morning and now all of a sudden it is not working.

How can I fix this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Usually this is caused by a corrupted file. So if one of those songs you added is the culprit, you'll have to exclude it to get the sync to work again. Try not adding the file, and playing it in iTunes, or another media player to check to see if it is bad.

Other causes are bad cable, bad USB driver, hub between the computer and the iPhone.

Have you backed up your iTunes Library this week? If not, you are risking losing your music and playlists....

The best way is to remove all files and then re-add it again.

I have none of those aforementioned issues and am still experiencing the problem. It seems arduous that you have to remove your entire library only to readd it all for the sake of adding a couple of new, incremental songs to the collection. Is there a corrupted library file that could be issue that would need regenerating or something of that nature? The problem is really annoying! Thank you very much for your help!

During the sync process the middle top bar of iTunes shows what songs are being synced. I would watch that bar to see what song is causing the hang. That will enable you to exclude the file from future syncs and possibly fix your issue by allowing you to replace the bad file(s).

I was actually looking for the song, but that's the issue... it doesn't even tell you what songs are being synced and, as such, I can't pinpoint what the issue is.

UNLESS there was SOME file at SOME point that is stuck in "iTunes' memory" and it is still trying to sync that file, but I have no idea what it is (especially since I don't see any label of songs in the space you're talking about. Is there a way to "reset syncing"?

You'll have to look at the bar somewhat carefully. There are up and down arrows to switch from seeing the player status vs. the sync status.

You will probably have to take everything off and put everything back on again to see the songs go by.
