I've had an iPhone 4, 4s, and now a 5. What advantages are there to jailbreaking an iPhone these days?? One thing I'd love to be able to do is hotspot my phone-- will a jailbreak enable me to do that?? I used to pay $20 a month for that ability but Verizon recently raised the cost to $30/ month-- forget that.

That is actually a free feature if you are on a family share plan through Verizon. It is built into the iPhone 5 (I think the 4S too) and comes free as part of Verizon's family share plan options. Now, if you are still hanging onto one of their unlimited data plans, you will have to pay Verizon for the hotspot feature. Jailbreaking an iPhone 5 (I don't think a proper jailbreak has been released for it yet) will allow you to make it a wi-fi hotspot. You may have to pay for the app (which will work only on a jailbroken version of iOS) but it can be done. That being said, Verizon has been stopping people from doing this. You might be able to get away with it for a little bit of time but they will send you notifications to stop doing it and switch to their family share plan if you really want that feature (or pay up the cost on an unlimited data plan).
So there really is no point in jailbreaking if you are looking for that specific feature and don't have a family share plan. Jailbreaking will allow you to run other, non-approved apps (NES emulators, games, etc.) and can even let you access more areas of your iPhone. Having said all of that, unless you really feel like you need to get into hidden files on your iPhone and mess around with them, I don't recommend jailbreaking. Verizon is stopping people from getting free hotspot functionality out of devices (iPhones and Androids) without having a specific plan or options.

Jailbreaking your iPhone is useless! I tried it once wasted lots of hours working out how. Even paid to find out. They have Apps that you still have to pay for. Every time the Apple iOS gets updated you need to jailbreak it again! You would be better off having your phone unlocked.

I mostly agree with this statement. Anytime Apple releases a new update to iOS, you have to wait for the jailbreak community to support it. This process can take a day or even months to happen. The iPhone 5 already comes unlocked if you have a Verizon version too. Only the Verizon version comes unlocked out-of-the-box and that is surprising given the reputation that Big Red carries.

Ok Kornchild-- what u said intrigues me-- what are some 'hidden files' that I may want to get into??? And the part about NES games yeah that's exciting. I still own an original NES with several games. I am a huge early Nintendo enthusiast. I read an article in Popular Science about putting NES games on an iPhone -- of course that hardly seems like a good reason to go through all the trouble of a jailbreak. I'm definitely going to call my Verizon guy tomorrow about hotspot on a family plan. Especially because I AM on a family plan. |

Just general iOS files allowing you to edit some things, like being able to have a signature in your text messages. Emulating older games isn't really all that fun as you have to use the screen and virtual buttons. My Droid X could run emulators out of the box but it was never really fun doing them. Having six virtual buttons for a Genesis controller made it hard to do much of anything. Emulating games is definitely different than playing games that are actually made with the touchscreen in mind.
