so, in settings and sounds, is there any way to prevent your tone to play for the preview of the volume while sliding the volume slider? iPhone 4, latest iOS 5 (not 6) if those make a difference.

It is there to allow you to know how loud it is going to be.
If you don't want to hear the ringer as you adjust the volume, then adjust the volume outside of that settings area.
