I had the best experience with the Otterbox Defender case when it comes to protecting my iphone 4. I bought it a month for $15 ago and I love it

Yep, I've got some rough and tumble friends who swear by Otterbox cases.

The Defender and Commuter series for the iPhone 5 aren't all that great. The cases themselves are fine but it is fully apparent that OtterBox was using leaked specs (and not final specs) when making their cases. The Defender Series for the iPhone 5 fits OK except that many people are having issues with the built-in screen protector not staying flush with the iPhone's display. This means moisture gets in there when the phone is in a pocket and causes bubbles that don't go away until the phone is left alone at night.
The Commuter Series for the iPhone 5 is even worse right now as the rubber part going around the device doesn't always proper fit and the port covers don't always line up. OtterBox used to make really high quality cases using specifications that fit the phones exactly. Now they made cases on leaked specs months before the iPhone 5 came out simply because they wanted to be first on the market.
