I'm not sure if this is possible. I'm very, very new to this. I didn't find anything in the forum or via google.
The screen dims when the phone isn't in use to save on battery power. Is there a way to make the screen go totally black when not in use? And then if I tap the screen, home button, or an incoming message/phone call comes in, the screen will light up to a particular brightness setting??

This should be the default behavior of an iPhone, touch and iPad. You set the Brightness in Settings/Brightness, auto-brightness is supposed to set the brightness according to your setting and the ambiant light. It will automatically turn the brightness up in sun light and down in the dark based around this setting.
Settings/General/Auto-Lock is the other setting. The display will automatically dim slightly as a warning the auto-lock is about to be engaged. You will then press the Home button to see the "Slide to Unlock" prompt.

Thanks, but my iPhone only dims, the screen doesn't turn off. The only time it turns off is if I put into sleep/hibernate mode. Otherwise it remains dim.
The brightness slider is set at about the middle if that helps you. Any ideas on how to make the screen turn off w/out using the sleep button??

Auto-Lock is what turns off the display or puts the iPhone to Sleep. It is the same function as the Sleep button.

Autolock turns it off, but you have to slide to unlock I just want the screen to turn off after some amount of time, and not have to unlock it all the time (yet keep the passcode/lock feature turned on). Having the phone sit on my desk, and hitting unlock all the time is annoying just to save battery power.
