I've read varying "reports" on whether apps are open or closed after pressing the home key once. Many think the apps are still open, many say that is not true, that double tapping the home key just pulls up a list of the recently used apps.
Some people reported a drain on their minutes, battery power etc w/out closing everything they opened..what's the REAL story if anyone knows Apple's site reads this * It's typically unnecessary to force an application to close. You can access all recently used apps by double-clicking the Home button, but these apps are not necessarily open. So, "not necessarily", how would you know if one is active or not?

The answer is - you don't.
Generally speaking those apps are in "hibernation" if they are enabled for fast-app-switching. If it concerns you, simply double tap the home button, then press and hold one of the app icons at the bottom of the screen (when they show up) ans then progressively go through each app, pressing the red - to completely close the apps.
