Exchange (Hotmail) and read messages

I have setup 2 gmail accounts and one hotmail account on my iPhone 3G but i am having a problem with the hotmail one.

If i visit either gmail account on my PC/Laptop and read some of the messages or mark all as read then when i update my iPhone mail it recognizes this and makes the required changes i.e making all messages read or just those i read on a PC. The problem with the hotmail is that it won't update properly so unless i read every message on my phone they stay as unread.

I'm not familiar with Hotmail and it's settings, but it sounds like you have it set to pop3 and not imap which the GMail accounts are set to. pop3 will generally only make changes on the device and transmit limited data back to the server. Imap is web based and all changes made on devices sync with the server and therefore any other device which can connect to it.

As far as I know, there's no way around this. It's a limitation of how hotmail works. One workaround is to forward all your.hotmail messages to one of your gmail accounts, or to set up yet another gmail account specifically for this purpose, which is what I myself have done.
