I downloaded some mp3s and dragged them into my phone on itunes. Then i edited the artist and name, also the sort artist and name. I synced but in my iphone it comes up as unknown artist. I really want those songs to go under the artist of the songs i purchased. WHY WON'T THIS WORK!?

The change in the MP3 file has not been written to the file.
In iTunes, make the change again (just to be sure), then right click the file and choose Convert ID3 Tags. Choose version 2.3. Then remove the song from your iPhone and put the song back on.

Make sure the tags in iTunes are set up correctly.
Click get info on the selected songs to change the tags.

The EXACT same thing happened to me and I cannot fix it. And NO, your suggestions do not work. It happened, when writing ID3 tags over WIFI sync failed. Since that moment, ID3 access in my iPhone library is impossible. No JB, latest iOS. It is very frustrating. In iTunes on Mac, everything appears OK (the ID3 tags ARE changed), yet in the iPhone library OLD id3 tag remain no matter what. Any help appreciated, since I do not won't to completely restore my iPhone because of this glitch....
