iPhone 3g Refuses to connect to PC

Hi all,
I've got an iPhone 3G and no matter what I do it will not be recognized by Windows or iTunes. When I plug it in, Windows does not show any drivers being installed and does not show up in Device Manager. I've tried absolutely everything I can think of. I've tried different ports, restarts, etc. to no avail. This is really starting to irritate me. Also, it will not charge while plugged in to the computer but will charge when plugged into an AC adapter. I would really appreciate any help!

Thanks for the reply but my problem is bigger than just connecting to iTunes. My computer doesn't even recognize it as a device (it does no driver installations after being plugged in). I fear that it's a hardware issue and not software.

I believe most of that is also covered in the suport document cjmnews posted. There is also the iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows which may help as well even though it only covers iPods.
