OMG! It might be true! Larger iPhone screen!

Guys, I just saw this news at Pocketnow. No word on whether it's true, but it looks hopeful.

pocketnow[.]com/iphone/alleged-iphone-5-part-indicates-larger-edge-to-edge-display

Just remove the brackets at the dot and copy the link.

This rumor has already been reported as not true. I don't have the link but they said that a new screen size will require all developers for apps to create them for different iPhone sizes. Apple is all about simplicity. They don't want an app store for "old" vs. "new" iPhones. They have an iPhone and an ipad store and they plan on keeping it as such. Steve Jobs has even stated that they won't be creating a smaller version of the iPad.

Also, Steve has already clearly outlined his dislike for phones with displays larger than ~3.5" (such as the Droid X) saying that people don't want to carry around such a large device in their pocket (which I do on a daily basis).

However, a larger display iPhone would not necessarily mean the introduction of a new App Store. Apple added a higher resolution display to the iPhone 4 and apps distinguished themselves as being "HD" for the retina display. App developers could very well released "HD+" versions of their apps, it wouldn't be all that difficult as Apple has already made a changed display standards once. Still, even after all of that, it isn't going to happen simply because Steve and Co. don't like smartphones with large displays.

You guys do know that Steve didn't like the iPod and thought it would never sell? But, because of the persistence of one of his engineers or directors or whatever the guy was, the iPod came into being. If it had been solely up to Steve, the iPod would not exist. There is always the possibility of things coming about that Steve hates.

Really? You are actually saying this is a reason the rumor isn't true?

Because last time I checked there are apps that ONLY run on the 4G touch & iPhone 4, apps that only run on the iPhone 3GS and 3G touch or later, apps that only run on iOS 4.1 or later, apps that only run on iOS 4.0 or later, apps that only run iOS 3.0 or later, apps that will run on touches and iPhones but not iPads, apps that run on all three type devices, apps that only run on iPads, etc., etc. Then there are the updated for retina display apps vs. the not updated for retina display apps. Oh, yeah, a new iPhone screen size would really complicate that mess

Never mind that unless the resolution is changed, they could easily offer a slightly larger screened iPhone without there even being an iota of effect on the app environment.

Sheesh, not even going to comment on the "Steve says..."

I heard that Steve said he didn't like small people or carnies...but maybe that's a different thread.

Honestly...I am always amazed at how many of SJ's personal friends are here.

Oh please, just shut up. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going back to something an executive said to try to figure out what a company will or will not do. That doesn't mean that we are friends or anything ######ed like that, we are simply going off of what was previously said. It is also more trustworthy than ZOMGLOL!!1! Teh rumers!!!11!!one!! that many websites continuously pump out (like the OP gave us, we have heard that rumor ever since the 1G iPhone release in 2007).

Uh, if the "Steve says..." and "Steve doesn't like..." idiocy held an iota of substance we would have never seen the iPod on Windows, we'd have never had video on the devices, we'd have never had radio on any of the devices, and so on. Steve has been reported as poo-pooing a significant percentage of Apple's best moves over the past decade. Either it's a carefully constructed disinformation campaign (in which case we SHOULD expect a larger screened iPhone ), or maybe whatever he personally feels is less important than people think.

That is still better than relying on sites that constantly spit out rumors just to generate hits. Steve's personal statements at least hold some merit over some 36 year-old 500 lb "tech guru" blogging from his parents' basement about future Apple products and their specs based on "inside information." I am not arguing that what Steve has said represents concrete information, it is just more reliable than other sites that are just trying to generate ad revenue by getting people to visit them.
