iPhone 4 purchase question...

...just a quick question/opinion. I was thinking of purchasing an iPhone4 in the very near future. I have never owned an iPhone, but I was a Touch (3g) owner, so I have a sew of both paid and free content.
I know an iPhone 4 owner who said they haven't had issues with the exception of dropped calls, but that seems to be a carrier issues, the antenna he said wasn't too much of an issue, not a deal breaker.
What I am asking if this point in time, would you purchase a iPhone 4 or wait for the next version of the iPhone.
I currently have an Android which I got free through my employer and I am on a month to month with my carrier so I would not need to break a contract; what is your opinion in all honestly and experience in general with the iPhone.
There are apps I like with Android, but there a a lot I miss that are iOS specific.

Thanks all.

I would wait for the new one. It's only 6-7 months away. I have a 4 and love it but got mine a month after they came out. Have not had any abnormal issues with the antenna strength.

I suggest you hold for the iPhone 5. I have a iPhone 4, the battery issue, and without the third party software, you can't delete your single calling history, etc..
It is said iPhone 5 will release at this year!!

I'm really interested in all comments on this thread, as i'm hoping to upgrade in next few weeks and I am torn between the Htc desire and the iphone 4. Android really appear to have got their act together and the Htc is alot cheaper for apparently equal tech!

Any good reasons to go for the ip4?

Cheers.

Here's what it comes down to when considering Android vs. iPhone.

You get an iPhone because you are already invested in, or are otherwise convinced by, Apple's focus on integration of hardware and entertainment media through the iTunes software, full stop.

iPhones aren't any better at being a phone than any other halfway decent phone. And without 3rd party software, they're not even all that useful, and it's not like you can't get plenty of software on the Android platform.

On the other hand, there is nothing that is going to compare to having your media synced across your phone, iPad, computer, Apple TV, etc. through a single home program with smartlists handling shuffling songs on and off the different devices, the presentation and breadth of the iTunes store for music, movies, television, and apps, along with some solid third party media choices like Audible and Rhapsody (there is a Rhapsody app for Android so I'm just mentioning, there is, as yet, no official and finalized Audible support for Android).

Apple started from the premise of entertainment media playback, Android has left that almost entirely up to third party carrier development, and it shows, badly. So it's really a question of what you want: do you want the best all in one you're going to get, but no/little choice of carrier and device? Or do you want to have apps and smartphone capabilities, choice of hardware and carrier, but probably still wanting a Zune/iPod for personal media?

Thanks for all your replies. As a FYI, Audible is ready and finalized for Android (I have used it), although your points are very good, thank you.
Verizon (my current carrier BTW) is about to make an announcement, as it is pretty much a given as of this morning, it will be a iPhone4.
Negative thing is this will not be an iPhone5 but a 4, although a "redesigned" 4.
If this comes true, would it be better to wait until June when Apple makes a iPhone5 available, all speculation, but why by a 4 when a 5 is coming this summer.

Just wait for the Verizon announcement if being on Verizon matters. Either there won't be much of an announcement beyond, 'hey, iPhone coming to Verizon in June, have a nice day!' or it will be the much rumored retweak of the iPhone 4.

Verizon and Apple are not going to design, manufacture, and begin sales of an iPhone 4.1 only to announce it's replacement in a few months, so if there is a "Verizon" model available soon, it's going to be the GSM/CDMA option for the coming year.

It will be interesting to see what Apple does to unite the iPhone because they don't want a permanent scenario of one set of carriers with the newest thing and another set of carriers with the leftovers, but since the AT&T exclusivity agreement ends 4/11, odds are this year we'll just see the leftovers as it was the fastest way to get a non-GSM model out there on Verizon and, probably by the end of the year, other carriers. If they do that, I'd guess they probably won't update next April, but wait and unite the models for the iPhone 6.

I'd go with my gut feeling. I both my iPhone 3GS exactly a year ago. Had the same dilemma.

I'm quite hesitant usually, yet I've never regret this.

However, I had a crappy old phone and you have an android based device already...

By "New one" you mean an updated/improved iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 won't likely be releaed until Summer 2012. I don't know where people get this "Brand new iPhone every year" idea from, Apple has pretty much shown that's not what they do, it's a 2 year device cycle with a refresh in between.

Why not wait? You will be kicking yourself otherwise. The best time to buy an iPhone is just after the model comes out.

baggs has it right I think. We'll see a 4S or something like that this year and then the iPhone LTE next year.

Yep, the best time to buy a new device is tomorrow!* :-) But then you'd never buy it. A wise old friend once told me, buy it if you need now and can get some real use from it over the coming months. Plus, there's always resale or hand-me-downs (or overs) to family members when you get the next one later in the year.

*Or, the day after you just bought one.

I'm a new iPhone 4 owner too and I hope iPhone 5 doesn't come out so quickly or at least I hope the difference between 4 and 5 is like 3G and 3GS, because I will be very sad if it will be more than that. I can't buy a new phone so quickly
