How do I turn off AUTOPLAY?

Whenever I plug my iphone into my car or speaker dock it starts playing automatically. I find this very annoying, especially if I just want to charge my phone and NOT listen to music. There has to be a way to disable this, if not than what a serious design flaw.

Maybe it only does that when it's left in iPod mode?
I've never had it happen to me, but I'm always on the home page, never in the iPod.

No it happens when I plug the phone in even if I have safari open, mail, or just the home page, or even when the phone is locked. The ipod app isn't even running.

Can't really find anything from a Google search, although your iPhone isn't jailbroken is it?
I do find it kind of weird though, looking through settings as I type this

is your stereo on and set to the ipod aux?
my iphone only starts playing when I switch the stereo to the CD channel that plays the iphone. Nothing plays when listening to FM or AM and such.

technically yes... I actually plug it into my car, and it's usually on:

Uh, that's not supposed to happen you know. Usually when you plug it out the music stops (on the iPhone, I mean, it pauses).
Only thing I can think of is restoring.
On a secondary note, how do you connect the iPhone to your car speakers? I can't seem to find a decent dock for it (not to mention one that doesn't out me of $100)

are you sure it's not supposed to happen? Other people have posted about it too... the ipod is supposed to start when docked to a speaker system... My car basically acts like a speaker system. When I unplug it it pauses, which is fine, I just don't want it to start playing a song as soon as I plug it in, especially if I want to use pandora instead.

My iphone/ipod setup is posted here:

$100 is a small price to pay for a NICE SOUNDING hookup that charges and looks clean without the wired mess.

the same happens with my iPhone. When I plug it into my car stereo or my logitech portable speakers, it starts playing. It starts in the song list, and goes alphabetically. My first song is "About A Girl" by Nirvana, from their unplugged CD. So when I plug in my phone, the iPod starts and I am greeted to applause, funny at first but now really annoying.

I have never found a way to turn it off.

My older iPods did the same, automatically turning on when plugged into the same devices. Except they would start playing albums in order, so I was always blasted with ABBA!

Guess I always thought they were supposed to do this?!?!?!

It's a function of the accessory itself, unfortunately. Not all Dock Connector accessories do this, but basically there are some that send the "Play" command to the device as soon as you connect it. Some will do this conditionally based on whether there's a signal on the other end or whether the device/speakers are actually turned on.

It wouldn't really be possible for Apple to disable this option on the iPod/iPhone itself without disabling the ability to control your device entirely. There's no "play-when-connected" option on the iPod -- the device on the other end is simply sending a "Play" or "Start" command in the same way as hitting the "Play" button on your speakers or remote.

a hack would be to have your iphone already PLAYing a song as you connect it. that way the PLAY becomes a PAUSE when the device initiates play on your iphone.

This may work for some accessories, but the Dock Connector interface accepts discrete play and pause commands, so it won't necessarily work in all cases -- it depends on how the accessory interacts with the device.
