Receiving instant email notifications?

Hi,

Does anyone know what settings I need on either my iphone 3G and or gmail account to receive email notifications as i receive new emails? I would like my phone to notify me of a new email, as it does with a text message. Currently, I have to open up my mail, and press the refresh arrow, to force a refresh and receive any email I may have waiting for me.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Gotta fetch it, it checks for new email ever 30 minutes, or whatever you set it to
Settings > Fetch New > Pick a set time > Advanced > Email

To add to ReyZero... you can get instant mail notification if you use Yahoo!, Exchange or MobileMe. Not Gmail, which only lets you fetch. I auto-forward from GMail to Yahoo! to get around this shortcoming.

What I'd like to know is if there is a way to get a different notification for text and e-mail when on vibrate. As far as I can tell, they vibrate the same, but to me a text requires more immediate attention than most e-mails.

And it would also be nice, and I think ChicoSt might also be asking, is if you can get a notification on-screen with a preview of the e-mail. That would be awesome. I also use gmail.
