Enable control of iphone-ipod when connected to Alpine head unit cde-9881

I've been looking and looking for a mod that will solve my problem, surprised this hasn't come up previously or perhaps I didn't find it.

I have an iPhone 8gb running v1.1.4
Alpine CDE-9881
Alpine KCE-422i cable which works and allows music to play through to the head unit.

The controls on the head unit are less than convenient and I'd like to regain control of the ipod portion of the iphone so I can search for albums / songs and skip ahead, etc. The rest of the phone still works but the iPod controls are disabled once I plug in the cable.

Any guidance? This is the only input on my receiver so switching to RCA cables is not an option, and I like that it charges the device.

Thanks!

solution

Hi, found this hack on youtube: Hacking a Sony iPod ready Car stereo for iPod Touch control (In a Kia Spectra5)

1: First you have to enable "Passcode Lock" on your iphone (make it easy like 0000, could get annoing while driving)
2: Turn off your ipod
3: Plug it to your Alpine or Sony head unit (make a post if this hack works on other HU)
4: Turn on iphone. Your head unit will try to access your music on your iphone, but it will fail, since the passcode protection is on and the code is not entered yet.
5: After the headunit ended it's "search" it will load the last played track, and pause it. (wont play it)
6: Last step: enter your passcode, and tada.

I personaly got bored doing this, since it takes a lot off time to reboot the iphone. So I'm still searching for an app or something easier to solve this problem. But if you know that you wont get out of the car then go for it.

Volume adjustment can be done on the HU only. Thats good...
On incoming calls the iphone does the volume off trick. Thats good too...

PS: you can switch step 2 with step 3! And maybe you have to set your HU to USB mode (not radio or ipod) before foing this (i dont remember)

have fun, I DRIVE SAFE (use a mounting kit near to your windshield, I'm pretty sure my first crach is going to be while i'm entering my passcode
