what a mess

:mad grandson accidently locked my I-pad, I tried password, did not work, Apple store said they could unlock, but I would lose all my downloads. NO instructions came with I-Pad to link to I-tunes, so what can I do to unlock this thing. thank you, P.K.

Without knowing the password, not much can be done. The password will not be your Apple ID password, but typically a numeric pin. Hopefully that will jog your memory. You probably set it when you first got the device, then turned it off.

Losing your downloads shouldn't really matter since you can download the apps and stuff again. What might matter are your contacts, pictures, messages and other data you generated that can't be retrieved without a backup.

All i-devices should be synced with iTunes occasionally just to help with this situation.

Do you know if you have a backup in iCloud? That would help with a recovery.

Do you have a computer with iTunes installed? Are you logged into your Apple ID on that iTunes?
If so, you might be able to make a backup in the locked state, by putting the USB side of your charging cable into your computer, and the other end into your iPad. If a backup is being made it will say something like Backing Up iPad Step 2 of 8 in the top center bar of iTunes.

The backup may not work because there could be a prompt under the lock screen asking if you want to trust this computer or not. Since it is locked you can't answer that question, and the backup will not work.

Let me know if you have an iCloud backup. You can log into your iCloud account from a computer using your Apple ID and password. The space usage will tell you if the iPad has a backup there or not. If you do have one, see how old it is, and you'll know approximately what will be lost with the restore.

Have you backed up your iTunes Library this week? If not, you are risking losing your music and playlists....
