iPad dumped all my apps

Very weird thing happened today to my 16Gb iPad 2. It was working fine, I closed the smart cover and then reopened it about 10 mins later. The lock screen came up but appeared to be frozen. I left it a moment and tried again. This time it opened up but all my apps were gone (there are a lot). I powered it off and restarted but still no apps. Safari still had all tabs open I'd had earlier, emails were fine as were iMessages just no apps. I've had to wipe it and do a full restore over iCloud which has taken most of the day.

This clearly isn't normal but does anyone have idea what caused it? I was lucky I had access to wifi today; I can't afford to have this thing repeat this when I'm out of wifi coverage.....

Any ideas?

Very strange... that's one I've never heard of before.

Don't know what could have caused it... If you're still under warranty, call up Apple Care and ask if they have any ideas. They're incredibly helpful.

Alternatively, or in addition, post over at apple.com, too.

I would suggest you to sign into the itunes account from which you purchased the apps ( on your computer). There you will find all the purchase history of all apps and will include all app updates that you've downloaded. So you can re-download apps. Or you can restore the iTunes library if the apps are in your iTunes library.
