What do you think for the new iPad?

What do you think for the new iPad?

Will you buy iPad for its retina display? or its 4G LTE support?

Already purchased (wifi) for retina display. But likely not if I already had an iPad.

Well I was all set to buy an ipad 2 last year but didn't because of there wasn't a bump in resolution and because of the poor camera on it.

This year, they finally updated the resolution and upgraded the back camera while unfortunately, keeping the very bad front facing camera. That's 2 out of the 3 things I was hoping for for the new ipad.

Since I've already been waiting a year and have no ipad, I bought it. If I had an ipad 2, I am not sure I would have bought it though. Probably would have waited another year at least.

I have an iPad 2 so I will not be picking up the iPad 3. Technically speaking, aside from 4G and built-in iOS voice dictation, there isn't anything that my iPad 2 can't do that is currently in the iPad 3. The main difference is that the iPad 3 looks better at doing what it does. Although I am sure the display is really nice, that isn't enough to make me sell my iPad 2 to pick up the 3rd generation model. I could also care less about the upgraded camera on the back. The lack of a flash is still a big deterrent and my 12.1MP compact point-and-shoot Sony can not only take better photos (especially in low light conditions without a flash) but better video as well at 1080i 60fps.

Now, if I was still using my iPad 1, I would wholeheartedly jump into the iPad 3. However, since the iPad 3 really only offers incremental bumps in terms of features (not to mention it is still using the same dual-core A5 processor as the iPad 2, just with two more graphical cores) over my iPad 2, I see no need to upgrade. I will be eyeing the iPhone 5 around October though. I think I will take the same approach I generally followed with my iPods: upgrade once every other generation. That way, by the time the iPad 4 comes out, there will be a much larger difference between that and what I have whereas the iPad 3 doesn't offer much of a technical update (again, it general does the same job but looks better at doing it).

I really like your thoughtful response on this question.

It's intriguing, however, because it suggests that someone who has an iPad 1 might be better off buying a heavily discounted iPad 2 now rather than an iPad 3! I've seen them side by side and tested their displays and speed and, frankly, the iPad 2 more than held its own!

It takes some time to appreciate the retina display. It is not as simple as a 5 min demo. Ipad 2 is capable. It is up to the user whether to pay extra.

I love the retina display and the 4G speed. The upgraded camera is nice too but I don't expect to use it much. Everything else is pretty much the same as my iPad 2. I don't notice apps running faster, just looking better. A co-worker upgraded from an original iPad to the 3 and he is blown away by the speed, but most of that speed really came with the 2 not the 3. Upgrade from 1 to 3 is huge. From 2 to 3, it's mainly the awesome display.

If you already have an iPad 2, you have to decide if it's worth the cost to upgrade. In my case, the answer is yes. Apple has me hooked. I save up all year so I can afford the latest Apple products as soon as they come out. I'm in the process of selling my iPad 2. Once it sells, the upgrade will have cost me $250-$300. And I'm happy to pay that much for the latest and greatest. Now I need to save up for the iPhone 5 (or 6 or whatever they want to call it).

I only saw 100$ rebate on the ipad 2 so I would not consider this "heavily discounted".

The question that you have yourself is, the ipad2 right now is just 100$ cheaper than the new ipad. So is 100$ worth is for a better screen, better back camera, Better CPU (quad core GPU for games) ?

Personally, if you own the original ipad or don't own one at all, the 100$ more is worth it to me. For some others, it won'T and the ipad 2 will be good enough.

I wasn't planning on buying one, but my husband got me one for my birthday. Two words: LOVE IT!!

I've had all three generations of iPads and what I've noticed between this and the iPad2:

-Faster
-Doesn't crash as often (only once in a not-yet-upgraded ap)
-Display is amazing.
-Even though it's heavier I think it feels better in my hands; less fragile.
-Did I mention the display? Even iPhone aps look amazing on it

I'm not sure it was worth the price, since I had an iPad2 (and of course, now that's HIS iPad...he always gets seconds), but it is getting a lot of use and I love it!

The iPad 3 is the same speed as the iPad 2. Apps open in the same amount of time and it even has the exact same CPU at its core (the A5). The only difference between the A5 in the iPad 2 and the A5X in the iPad 3 is that Apple (actually Samsung) added two more graphical cores and 1GB of RAM. Other than that, the SoC is exactly the same. Since the CPU is the same, apps aren't going to be any faster than on the iPad 2. They will definitely look better if they are programed for the iPad 3's display (such as Angry Birds Space) but they aren't going to perform any better.

Then again, by your faster comment, you may have meant internet surfing and/or wireless LTE access. Yes, you are right that it is faster in those cases as the iPad 3 can now fully use a solid home wi-fi connection and I have been experiencing LTE speeds that are about 10 times faster than what my Droid X gets through 3G (both are on Verizon).

I had the iPad 1, and I really am impressed with the iPad 3, the most impressive thing for me is the retina display, its an absolute gem. The speed increase is also quite noticeable too. Glad I got the iPad 3.

Smile Why I bought the iPad 3

I skipped over the iPad 2, But after I learned that Best Buy would give me $220.00 for my iPad 1 AND Apple/AT&T would let me keep my unlimited plan I got with the iPad 1. I jump and got the new iPad 32gb 4G .

My iPad 3 is going back and I'm keeping my iPad 1. Some issues need to get worked out. First are screen issues. My iPad 3 retina screen leans into the warm color temperature spectrum. It has a slight yellowish tint on virtually all screens which seems to reduce contrast and crispness. I know previous iPads color temperatures were were cooler but this yellowish tint is excessive to my eyes. I've viewed many websites, apps, and videos comparing my iPad 1 and 3 side-by-side. I ran the HD version of the new Girl with the Dragon Tatoo simultaneously on both machines side-by-side. I also saw this movie in a cinema so I have some idea of how the director intended it to look. I believe the iPad 1 better represented what I saw in the cinema. Again, the iPad 3 seemed to emphasize yellows to the point where the movie just wasn't as crisp and contrasty as the iPad 1 and in the cinema. Additionally, resolution of the retina screen is better but not nearly as much as Apple's advertising led me to believe.

Second are wifi issues. When walking around the house with both my iPad 1 and 3, the iPad 3 wifi signal decreases quicker and looses signal in areas where the iPad 1 still receives a signal. I've tried this several times covering the same areas and the wifi signal loss is the same. I changed how I carried the iPad 3 and it didn't help.

I really like the improvements in the iPad 3 and it is twice as fast or more on downloads and app changing when I compare it side-by-side with my iPad 1. I also like the camera and dictation capabilities my iPad 1 lacks. But until I can get a retina display with less yellow tint and wifi sensitivity that matches my iPad 1, I'll hold off on purchasing a new iPad.
