I would venture to say that 95% of the apps I have currently installed on my iPad 3 have been updated to use a higher resolution. One of the holdouts had been Temple Run but they recently updated it for the new iPad. Even then, apps that are made for the iPad 2's resolution still don't look any worse than they do on the iPad 2. The ability to view higher resolution photos trumps any apps that are still lagging behind and haven't been updated for the higher resolution display.

If you "could care less," doesn't that mean you DO care?

"I have had an iPad 1 then an iPad 2 and now I have ordered an iPad 3 (new).
I look forward to its arrival and getting my hands on it and to see what the new screen is like etc."

That's really swell. Am most gratified to learn of your purchasing intentions. As for me, am planning on getting a haircut this afternoon, but may put it off until next week.

I got the Wi-Fi/3G 64 GB model on Friday the 10th. It's amazing. I can't pull myself away from it!

I will buy the ipad based on both. Retina display gives me wonderful graphics and 4gLTE gives me fast speed.

Of course the 4g LTE should eat up my data double the speed. but i guess thats the way it should be because we're moving towards 4g anyway. I'll want to have a device that supports 4g when they reveals the data plans for 4g.

Now that the proverbial dust has settled, anyone have comments on the "heat" issue that first was being reported... especially if one isn't running 3-d or action adventure games?

I'm still on the fence about getting our family a 2nd iPad. We have the original-- and I still can't shake the experience of seeing little difference between an iPad 2 and 3's screen.

Heat has been a concern for me about the iPad 3--as a plus, though, is the glass better, or device designed better so that it's less likely to fracture?

I keep hoping that Apple would put an iPad 2 with 32 gb on its refurb page (again).

Of course, at this point, an iPad mini might be the next thing to get!

The heat is really a non-issue -- people got nervous because it felt warmer than before, but that doesn't mean that it was every really a problem, but merely a perception. From our Ask iLounge article on iPad Heat Dissipation and Cases:

Quote:
Shortly after the release of the third-generation iPad, we tested the heat issue by putting the iPad in an Otterbox case and playing Infinity Blade II for an extended period of time. Designed to be highly protective, the Otterbox iPad cases would provide some of the poorest heat dissipation of any we’ve seen, yet even after an hour of play the heat did not even make holding the iPad uncomfortable when taken out of the case, let alone triggering any kind of overheating warnings.
In terms of the physical construction, however, you'll find it's about the same as the iPad 2 -- the glass isn't any different, nor has the design changed dramatically other than a few subtle differences and a virtually imperceptible increase in thickness and weight.

I wouldn't expect the iPad's design to drastically change anyway. All iPads are very similar in design and they can't really move away from that. You have a slate with a 9.7" display... Small changes can take place but Apple can't do what they did with the iPhone 4 by implementing a drastic new design like that. The iPad's size (even if a 7" one comes out) is going to limit Apple's design choices.

Either way, that doesn't stop the iPad 3 from being above and beyond the iPad and iPad 2. The retina display is a clear improvement not only in terms of resolution but also with color reproduction and the ability to properly display HD content (the iPad and iPad 2 couldn't fully display 720p content). A 1080p movie is going to really shine on the iPad 3. The camera is also much, much better. I can now actually use my iPad 3 to take a picture of something if I didn't bring my digital camera and it won't turn out like complete crap. The rear camera in the iPad 2 is laughable at best and it produces image quality that rivals that of cellphones from 2001.

I don't really see a reason not to go with the iPad 3. Apps are being released that take advantage of the retina display (I think every newly released iPad app does), it has better color reproduction, a better rear camera, more powerful graphics (games that take advantage of its architecture are near-console quality), 4G LTE compatibility, and it still has the same thin chassis and long battery life of the previous editions.

Jesse, Kornchild, appreciate the feedback.

I had read Square Trade's analysis of higher fragility in the iPad 2--and many users complaints who had experienced fractured screens, seemingly more often than with the original iPad. (Some analysts reported the glass being more flush or attached to the frame differently.) So, I was hoping to discover that the iPad 3 had a less fragile design or more shock resistant glass.

Not sure if we'd ever use the iPad camera feature--if we're going somewhere then I take along the iPhone 4. But it is clear that the iPad has a MUCH better camera.

As to the screen... I'll have to look at it again. I'm still harkening back to an afternoon at a Best Buy where several customers and I-- along with BB staff--examined an iPad 2 and 3 screen side-by-side and, unless we blew up the text greatly (ridiculous zoom), we could NOT tell the difference in display quality. We went to major news sites; even tried HD videos. It was surprising--especially to the BB staff--but fits those videos where they ask passerbys or those exiting or entering an Apple store to guess which is which-- and people cannot.

Now, from what I understand, iOS 6 won't run on iPad 1; and Siri won't come to iPad 2 (though that doesn't seem much of a factor).

All this may be moot as I haven't seen the $400 iPad 2 refurb 32gb on Apple's site again. Plus, by the time I decide to pull the trigger, I'd probably be better off waiting for the iPad 4!!

I never really use the camera much either. I do take my iPad with me everyday to work but not my digital camera. My Droid X has a camera on it too but the thing stinks, 8 MP of pure crap. Either way, you can now actually use an iPad to take a picture and it will come out decent. The iPhone 4 is still going to produce a better image (mainly due to the flash) and the iPhone 4S is going to be better but the iPad 3 is still up there especially for a tablet.

Looking at a display surrounded by others under fluorescent lighting definitely isn't enough. The difference is easily observable even on an iPad's home screen. App icons, text (under app icons and above in the menu bar), etc. are clearer. The difference is just as drastic as going from an iPhone/iPhone 3G/iPhone 3Gs to an iPhone 4.

As you pointed out (something I forgot), some iOS 6 features are coming solely to the iPad 3 and not the iPad 2 or iPad 1 (which isn't even going to see iOS 6). Siri is one of them but there is a rather long list of iOS 6 updates the iPad 3 will see but they won't be reaching the iPad 2. There are still probably another ~7 months before a new generation iPad comes out. So it is getting to that point where you either need to make a decision or get off the pot.

Actually, it's not too long of a list of features that won't be supported on the iPad 2 -- basically just Siri and FaceTime over 3G. Apple's notes seem to indicate that turn-by-turn navigation will be available on the iPad 2 as well, although without Siri I'm not sure if that will include voice-guided directions or not.

Thanks again to both of you! I'm probably leaning towards the iPad mini at this point--it could replace my iPhone for my middle of the night reading--and be a convenient, quick grab to look up stuff while watching TV (you know, that type of thing where you wonder-- which show did that actor appear in before? I think it was X, but ....)

Plus, it'd be fun have an i-device in a different form factor. I hadn't thought to check if any of the rumors have including a camera--IIRC, it will--that could make a good grab and go device, too!

I think it's extremely likely that it will have a camera -- Apple has been pushing FaceTime across all of its devices, and having the new iPad mini be the one device that doesn't support FaceTime would almost be a step backward, IMHO.
