Has anyone tried a Smart cover with a case?

I was wondering if anyone has tried putting a case on their ipad 2 and trying to use the smart cover with it..

I think it would depend on the type of case, but based on the design of the Smart Cover I suspect most wouldn't work without some modification, since the "hinge" portion of the cover attaches to the side of the iPad.

I can see a market for InvisiShield type skins or even things like Gelaskins with the Smart Covers though.

I'm thinking most likely not. Even in the unlikely case that the magnetic hinge would attach through a hard shell, the tolerances are so close that you'd end up with a gap at the right edge of the screen -- the Smart Cover basically wouldn't cover the entire screen and in fact might not even match up with the right-side magnets which are used both to hold it closed and activate the lock/unlock feature.

Basically, the entire right edge of the iPad needs to be clear of any obstructions for the Smart Cover to attach properly. Its actually contoured specifically to the side of the iPad. Some hard shell manufacturers may eventually come out with cases that accommodate the Smart Cover, but it's equally likely we'll see case options that implement he same magnetic features themselves.

The Smart Covers are an expensive option if you're looking for something with full protection. I'd suggest either getting a less expensive basic case for now and seeing what comes out in the next few weeks or living with the lack of any rear protection -- which may be fine if you're planning to keep the iPad in a bag of pouch anyway.

As demonstrated above, the smart cover works with the Incipio Feather case. I emailed incipio and they said it would be compatible. They also said that they are going to be release another version of the incipio feather case that will be specifically made to work with the ipad smart cover, it will be released within 6-8 weeks.

I put a skin on mine. It looks good, protects the back from scratches, and doesn't add to the bulk.

I have the Incipio Feather case and while the Smart Cover does "work" it is very easy for it to fall off or slide off compared to using the Smart Cover on a naked iPad. I find myself just taking the Smart Cover completely off when using my iPad. Using it primarily as a very expensive screen protector.

Looking forward the revised version that works with it as it would be much more functional in my opinion.

Incipio is releasing the Smart Feather Case soon for the iPad 2, as the name implies it allows you to use a smart cover with thier hardshell backing. Looks to be what your looking for.

iPad Back Cover with Smart Cover

Take a look at the SwitchEasy CoverBuddy..... I just got mine yesterday and love it. It works with the smart cover, and even matches the color.

Speck Smartshell, FTW

I'm using my black leather Smart Cover with a Speck Smartshell hard back cover. This back is very well made and seems to cover more of the iPad than most other back covers. Speck is great to deal with and ships super fast from their site.

Both the black and clear were in stock earlier this week, but they're out again.
Acme Made Skinny Sleeve. Super thin still and my iPad 2 is well protected.

Unlike many people, I really like the smart cover so I'm digging this setup.

I got my Smart Feather Case in the mail today. Very nice, works beautifully with the Smart Cover, has that lovely silky touch to it and fits very well. My only quibble is that the camera aperture is a little high, but not so much as to impede use of the camera. It will provide great protection for the back of my iPad 2.

I use a skin as well, does the job for the time being until something better comes along...
