I am just about to purchase an iPad. I would like to get a good case, preferably made of leather. I would like the case to by sturdy, and also serve as either a portrait or landscape stand, and also as a stand for typing (slight up elevation at back of iPad). I would like to spend no more than $40-45, any suggestions?
Best Regards, Larry |

Even after all this time, I still thinknthat Apple's case is the best. It isn't leather but it protects the iPad and lets you use it in various positions (all of the ones you mentioned and a couple more). Most cases have limited use orientations, don't protect as much, or just aren't as good. I have gone through 3 iPad cases and they were all returned because I did not like them as much as Apple's.

I recently read good reviews about this case. My primary concern was protection. I have the apple sleeve which is good but for travel I want something with more protection.

Apple doesn't have a sleeve for the iPad, they have an actual protective case. Sleeves are really only good while an iPad is being transported. They don't protect and iPad while it is being used. The sleeve you mentioned is a hair thicker than Apple's case but the brunt of any drop is still going to be absorbed by the iPad itself. I guess I just don't see a need for a sleeve especially since people are going to throw their iPads in some sort of case (backpack, shoulder bag, etc.) to begin with.
Lastly, sleeves can be a pain when going through airport security. The iPad has been cleared to leave it in a bigger bag but I get requests all the time to take it out and turn it on. A sleeve will add to tue frustration while a protective case means it will just have to be flipped open to turn I on. I know a sleeve will only add 10-15 seconds to this process but that is a long time after waiting in an endless line just to have someone hassle you for not taking out an item that has been cleared to stay in your bag. A sleeve is also not what the OP wanted. I broke their leather request but they wanted a case that would hold their iPad up in different orientations. A sleeve won't do that. I don't mean to crap on your post, I just hate sleeves and that isn't what the OP was asking for.

Thanks all for the input so far. My desire is not a sleeve, but rather a leather case, with multii-position for use for typing and viewing the screen for a slide show or a movie. Leather is preferred but not mandatory, and my budget is $45-40. Any further feedback would be appreciated.

I recently watched a video podcast where one of the speakers really liked the Scosche Folio Case, which is a leather-like material and sells for around $50. I am using the standard apple case, which I toss into a 11 inch sleeve.

I have the Phillips Easel Pad, purchased from Target. I like that the case allows for both portrait and landscape viewing with multiple viewing angles via the cushioned notches inside the case. A bonus is that the cushioning works very well to protect the screen when the iPad is closed. What I don't like is that when I try to push in headphones, the iPad slips backward a little so the jack doesn't seat well the first time. You really have to push the jack until you are at the very end and can't push anymore. Also, the cutout for the jack and the sleep button is a little small so you have to dig in a little to access those areas. Otherwise I recommend this case for its protective qualities as well as the easy way you can view the iPad quickly.

Larry, Another vote for the Apple case. I have bought several cases for my iPad and continually return to this one. I love the protection, nice fit without straps to hold the iPad in the case. It is way overpriced for what you are getting, but this is a problem with Apple accessories. This is a good one.
Check out monoprice for a inexpensive shell type of case, but you will get no screen protection. This is nice if you are staying around the house because it will give you good grip on the slippery iPad. I hate to put my iPad in my bag with the shell case on because of the lack of screen covering. I keep my iPad in a M-51 Engineers bag when I am on the go. I like this bag because it isn't leather or fancy and doesn't make me look European. Not that there is anything wrong with being European... It also doesn't raise security suspicions when visiting malls or other public places. If you like your iPad half as much as I do, you will love it. Paul

I have the marware ecovue, nice leather case. I like the hand strap, makes it much easier to hold while lounging on the couch. It also has a stand for typing. It is much bulkier than the apple case though and does not protect he corners well in case of a drop.
The cyber acoustics leather case looks nice also, maybe thinner and protects the corners. Check out YouTube for some videos on the cases.
