I wish the developers of garageband / facetime could make the app so that people can jam in real time and record, like combining facetime with garageband, pretty much like the scene in the movie "The Rocker" when they jam in real time with macbooks.

You can do that but each iPad has to be in the same area, they haven't opened it up to online jamming. I think jamming is done through bluetooth so you have a theoretical ~30 ft wireless range, probably more like 15-20 ft.
