Post Complete Podiobook (Podcast audiobook) directory

With the medium of 'podiobooks' (audiobooks released as weekly mp3 podcasts) just starting to get off it's feet I thought it would be interesting to collate just what novels are available into one directory. I will also try and include any other interesting stuff I find, such as podcast radio drama's etc. This page will be updated at least once a week, please let me know if you spot any error's dead links etc.

What are Podiobooks? Visit Podiobooks.com for more info.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (read by Jason Pomerantz)

From the Reader, Jason Pomerantz:

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has been called "the first true American fairy tale" and it richly deserves the title. The story of Dorothy's epic journey through a strange land, filled with terrifying enemies and loyal allies, resonates today as much as it did when it was first written, at the turn of the last century.

You've probably seen the movie countless times, so you might not expect any surprises from the book. But when you listen, you'll be charmed by how imaginative it is, and in a way that's different from the film.

I dearly love the movie, but, in this reading, I've tried to approach the story as if I'd never seen it. My Dorothy is a little younger than her cinematic counterpart and her trio of beloved friends - The Scarecrow, The Tin Woodsman and The Cowardly Lion - are all just a little sillier. It's hard to escape from the shadow of the MGM spectacular, but I've done my best. I hope you have as much fun listening as I'm having recording!

So sit back, put on your slippers (ruby, silver or whatever color you like) and watch out for flying monkeys! Load up your MP3 player and remember - There's no place like home!

Fiddle and Burn by Jason Pomerantz

Part comedy. Part soap opera. A fiction blog. A serialized sit-com. A daily comic strip in prose.

When Rantz takes a job as Circulation Director of Fiddle and Burn: Guide to Fandom Magazine, he hauls his family to a new home. None of them realizes that this will lead to one bizarre adventure after another.

There's an epic struggle to throw away an old garbage can.

There are embarrassing incidents involving a very rude laptop computer.

There's a heroic quest to overcome parental objections and acquire an upgraded version of a violent computer game.

There are profound metaphysical breakthroughs revealed in the dentist's chair.

And, running through all the story lines, there's the strange figure of Coyote Man - Is he a noble superhero who defends the suburbs from vicious villains? Or is he a sad old man who lives in a dream world inside his head? It's a tale both comic and tragic, inspiring and pathetic. Some might even say... quixotic.

Whether it's comic book and science fiction fandom, the publishing industry or modern American family life, Fiddle and Burn squeezes out the humor and delivers it in easily digestible bite sized doses.

Colonization is the theme of this exciting, complex page-turner that provides a provocative and entertaining look at Thoreau's classic eco-text Walden. Eccentric billionaire Jack Winter has bought the planet Beekman's Pea, renamed it Walden, and created a utopia in which members renounce the technologies of human civilization. Marginalized by these newcomers, the planet's original inhabitants are resisting the colony's dominance by setting fires to Walden's artificial ecology. A member of Walden, Prosper Gregory Leung is a veteran firefighter who believes in protecting Winter's utopian vision, but when he is wounded, he begins to learn of the terrible price that the people of Walden are paying for their paradise. Interwoven with themes of environmental responsibility, political struggle, and courage, this adventure novel nimbly combines political and social relevance with a flawless and gripping narrative from a veteran science fiction author.

Come, Let Me Whisper by Russell L. Burt

Macabre fiction. Horror fiction. Dark fiction. Whatever you choose to call it, that is what is contained within this collection of short stories. But other than that, these tales are as varied as can be. Ghost stories... they're in there. Lovecraftian monsters... certainly. Twist endings... got it. Psychological terror... of course. Sunny, happy endings... not so much. Oh, and one other thing these stories have in common: they are intended for a mature audience- one who is not easily offended, I might add.

hackoff.com by Tom Evslin

Larry Lazard, CEO of hackoff.com, takes his company public and watches its stock price soar and collapse. Following a hostile takeover attempt, Lazard is found dead in his office of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Author Tom Evslin, a serial CEO, also took a company public in the Internet bubble and fought off hostile takeover attempts in the subsequent rubble. Unlike Larry, Evslin lived to tell what may be the definitive story of those strange times.

The mystery moves backwards and forwards around the time of Larry's death. Sex, power, money, farce, and tragedy mix in boardrooms and bedrooms, the parties of the World Economic Forum in Davos, and the smoky stairway of the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

hackoff.com - not a porn site - provides anti-hacker protection for e-commerce. Larry Lazard started the business after his release from prison to which he was sentenced for a confessed hacker attack on banks.

The folks at hackoff track the company's stock price with fatal fascination; an online chat board provides a Greek chorus of contradictory explanations and expectations; analysts spin golden fantasies from websites and eyeballs; traders conjure real fortunes at their trading desks; and everyone who can clamors for "friends and family" stock.

hackoff.com's characters include CFO Donna Langhorne, Larry's ex-lover and classmate from Harvard Business School and a former swimsuit model; Chief Technical Officer Dom Montain, who dropped out of Caltech to write video games; Detective Mark Cohen, NYPD, who's investigating Larry's death; Larry's wife Louise, who is certain her husband was murdered; and Ahmed Qali, who represents a group of Palestinian programmers in Jenin to which hackoff out-sources work. Along with the bankers, CEOs, and CFOs of dotcom America, are eavesdropping limo drivers and waiters, venture capitalists, hackers, terrorists, and the victims and heroes of 9/11.

If you've ever wanted to be a fly on the wall of the boardrooms, private jets, and ornate meeting rooms of brokerage firms, hackoff.com gives you your chance. You'll be better prepared for the next bubble if you read this book but that's not why you'll eagerly download each online episode. You'll do that because the cleverly woven mystery will have you dying to know whodunit.

How To Disappear Completely by Myke Bartlett

Part film noir detective story, part fantasy adventure, part East End gangster tale, How to Disappear Completely concerns Theo Braithwaite, a failed actress and worse waitress, becoming involved in an unseen world populated by history's rejects and runaways from a secret society known as The Footmen. A stranger to London, waiting for life to come and find her, she is instead found by a part-time thief called Kilbey Salmon who, along with his rockabilly-obsessed partner, is attempting to eke out a living stealing things that have already been stolen and finding people who don't want to be found.

An episodic narrative, Kilbey and Nero's capers will drag Theo through the forgotten parts and people of London, hunted by ancient sects, carnivorous shadows, cannibalistic butchers and off-duty policemen. Along the way she'll meet the Eternal Footmen, blow up Hammersmith Bridge, reach the end of history and quite possibly disappear completely.

If Theo is to survive, she'll need to get her life sorted before all of our futures catch up with her.

Marwan by Alex Schefrin

How did an Egyptian city planner, a Yemeni religious fanatic, a boy from the United Arab Emirates who worshipped sex, not Allah, and a young student of aircraft design who went to a Christian school in Lebanon- four very different men with very different ideas- get involved in flying the 9/11 planes? How did the plot develop, and who developed it?

"Marwan," a novel by Aram Schefrin, puts the reported facts together and fills in the details- from the group's first coming together in Hamburg, Germany, to the moments before the jets they were to hijack took off. You'll come to know the participants, and how they were motivated, what their personal lives were like and the roles they played in the plan. You will learn to know them as people- not simply as "terrorists"- because, as the author sees it, you have to understand your enemies if you want to defend yourself.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories read by Tim Aldrich

The Last Bow Part 1

The friends of Mr. Sherlock Holmes will be glad to learn that he is still alive and well, though somewhat crippled by occasional attacks of rheumatism. He has, for many years, lived in a small farm upon the downs five miles from Eastbourne, where his time is divided between philosophy and agriculture. During this period of rest he has refused the most princely offers to take up various cases, having determined that his retirement was a permanent one. The approach of the German war caused him however, to lay his remarkable combination of intellectual and practical activity at the disposal of the government, with historical results which are recounted in His Last Bow.

The Valley of Fear Parts 1 - 22 Story Complete

The story is of a brutal murder in a mansion house in the English countryside. There's not much sense-making evidence to work on so Holmes and Watson go down to investigate along with Scotland Yard and the local police. Sure enough, Holmes solves the case rather quickly and all is revealed. But it's here that Conan Doyle uses the same split narrative he used in A Study in Scarlet. The story jumps far back in time and details the long, sinister plot leading up to the murder in the mansion.

The Hound of the Baskervilles Parts 1 - 21 Story Complete

When Sir Charles Baskerville is found mysteriously dead in the grounds of Baskerville Hall, everyone remembers the legend of the monstrous creature that haunts the moor. The greatest detective in the world, Sherlock Holmes knows there must be a more rational explanation - but the difficulty is to find it before the hellhound finds him . . .

The Return of Sherlock Holmes Parts 1 - 42 Story Complete

After Sherlock Holmes' apparently fatal encounter with the sinister Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, the great detective reappears, to the delight of the faithful Dr Watson in The Adventure of the Empty House.

The Sign of Four Parts 1 - 15 Story Complete

Yellow fog is swirling through the streets of London, and Sherlock Holmes himself is sitting in a cocaine-induced haze until the arrival of a distressed and beautiful young lady forces the great detective into action. Each year following the strange disappearance of her father, Miss Morstan has received a present of a rare and lustrous pearl. Now, on the day she is summoned to meet her anonymous benefactor, she consults Holmes and Watson.

Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes Parts 1 - 38 Story Complete

The second of the collections of Holmes short stories. Stories included are:-
Silver Blaze, 1892
The Yellow Face, 1893
The Stock-broker's Clerk, 1893
The 'Gloria Scott', 1893
The Musgrave Ritual, 1893
The Reigate Puzzle , 1893
The Crooked Man, 1893
The Resident Patient, 1893
The Greek Interpreter, 1893
The Naval Treaty, 1893
The Final Problem, 1893

A Study in Scarlet Parts 1 - 18 Story Complete

Arthur Conan Doyle's Study in Scarlet is the first published story involving the legendary Sherlock Holmes, arguably the world's best-known detective, and the first narrative by Holmes's Boswell, the unassuming Dr. Watson, a military surgeon lately returned from the Afghan War. Watson needs a flat-mate and a diversion. Holmes needs a foil. And thus a great literary collaboration begins.

Watson and Holmes move to a now-famous address, 221B Baker Street, where Watson is introduced to Holmes's eccentricities as well as his uncanny ability to deduce information about his fellow beings. Somewhat shaken by Holmes's egotism, Watson is nonetheless dazzled by his seemingly magical ability to provide detailed information about a man glimpsed once under the streetlamp across the road.

Then murder. Facing a deserted house, a twisted corpse with no wounds, a mysterious phrase drawn in blood on the wall, and the buffoons of Scotland Yard--Lestrade and Gregson--Holmes measures, observes, picks up a pinch of this and a pinch of that, and generally baffles his faithful Watson. Later, Holmes explains: "In solving a problem of this sort, the grand thing is to be able to reason backward.... There are few people who, if you told them a result, would be able to evolve from their own inner consciousness what the steps were which led up to that result." Holmes is in that elite group.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Parts 1 - 37 Story Complete

The first of the Sherlock Holmes collections, first published in 1892. Stories included are:-

A Scandal in Bohemia
The Red-headed League
A Case of Identity
The Boscombe Valley Mystery
The Five Orange Pips
The Man with the Twisted Lip
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
The Adventure of the Speckled Band
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet

Lady Chatterly's Lover by D.H. Lawrence

Presented by Urban Art Adventures audio books, voice overs, vlogs and audiobooks from the public domain.

About the book:-
A book most notable for the controversy surrounding its publication, Lady Chatterley's Lover underwent various printings due to its sexual content: it was published privately in Florence in 1928, in a bowdlerized version in London in 1932 and finally unexpurgated by Grove Press in America in 1959. It was also Lawrence's last novel. It is the story of Connie, Constance Reid, who marries Sir Clifford Chatterley in 1917 only to have him wounded in the war such that he must be confined to a wheelchair permanently soon afterwards. After a brief affair with Michaelis the playwright that leaves her unsatisfied, Lady Chatterley enjoys an extremely passionate relationship with Oliver Mellors, the gamekeeper on their estate. The later stages of the novel move onto the issue of her pregnancy by Mellors and her trip to Venice to disguise the true parentage of the child. The truth is eventually uncovered and the novel ends with a sense of fulfillment for both Lady Chatterley and Mellors although the situation is never fully resolved. The story and its sentiments suggest that the sexual relationship is the most profound of all and that it may be debased either by treating it lightly or by viewing it with shame (the attitudes seemingly taken by young and old respectively). The main reason for the censorship of the book in England was the unprecedented unrestrained and explicit language used to describe the Mellors affair.

Seeds of the Machina by Thomas Moore

"Even the smallest children knew about the story of The Darkening. It was a cautionary tale to remind everyone of what the damages of blind ambition can cause. Children would listen with their eyes wide open in terror as they imagined the wrath of God being unfurled upon the unwitting people who had dared to defy their own limitations. The programmers were powerful people that could control steel and wield vast creations at their fingertips, but when they discovered that humans were the result of complex programming and design, it was only natural that soon they would let their curiosity cause them to tamper. A new type of programmer was born, they were called geneticists.

It started off innocently; the programmers first decided that they would fix the inherent design flaws of their own programming. They understood the algorithms of what it meant to be human, but they weren't listening to the musical complexity in its entirety. Many people across the ancient world hailed the programmers of genetics and looked forward to ushering in a new era of humans that lacked flaws and defects. When parents wanted to have children they could pick out what kind of children they wanted, or even their pets or their food that they would consume.

Humans were modified intrinsically so that they would be resistant to damage, grow stronger, and live longer. Within a hundred years there wasn't an aspect of civilization that wasn't altered by the geneticists and their tampering.

But during all of this modification that the geneticists accomplished they were all surprised when they realized that there was a flaw they had overlooked..."

Weaver's Web by P.J. Ballantine

Betrayal by one you love is the cruelest cut of all. And when the Lord of Crisfell betrays it is done on a grand scale.

Ashi'mei Candre feels her life is destroyed in that instant, but her love's betrayal goes far further- he is sacrificing his own people.

Amongst the islands of Crisfell, honour and clan is everything, but that may also be their undoing. A dark secret from the past will now come back with a vengeance, and Ashi'mei must put her own troubles aside to face this greater danger. For over the dark sea is a menace of flesh and hunger, which having been turned back once, is only more determined to remake Crisfell in its image. When the danger comes from within as well as without, Ashi'mei's world is doomed. And yet there are two from beyond the island who may help, one a passionate young man from their traditional enemy, and the other a compelling creature with mastery of the flesh to rival the menace beyond the sea.

With friends and clan her only hope, the time to stand and fight has come. Ashi'mei must search within herself for salvation for her people, face her darkest fears, and risk everything she loves.

A Different Point of View by TD-0013

TD-0013, a.k.a. "Thirteen" has been a proud soldier of the Empire for about 17 years, having signed up when he was 18 years old after seeing some recruiting holo-programs, and figuring his life as a starving artist was getting nowhere. After finishing Imperial infantry boot camp on Tullis, he underwent further training in the Empire's Desert Specialist program. Upon graduation he was immediately transferred to the Dune Sea Garrison, stationed on Tatooine, a planet which had been something of a historical "hot-spot" for decades.

ADPOV is a compilation of his reports, meant to try to give everyone the real truth about Stormtroopers, the Empire, and everything else in the Star Wars universe people seem to be so damned confused about.

Just came across these:
http://librivox.org/ "LibriVox provides totally free audiobooks from the public domain."
http://www.spokenalex.org/ "The Spoken Alexandria Project is creating a free library of spoken word recordings, consisting of classics in the public domain and modern works (with permission). "

Oedipus Audiobook?

Does anyone know of a free audiobook for Oedipus Rex by Sophocles? I have searched all around on free audiobook sites and have yet to find one. I'd appreciate a timely response if possible. Thank you!

I don't know of a free version of Oedipus Rex, but you could always try clicking the "Listen to three free audiobooks on your iPod Risk-Free" and get the trial Audible promotion -- they have two versions of Oedipus Rex. Alternatively, if your public library offers OverDrive downloadable books, you may be able to borrow the NAXOS production (Martin Sheen and full cast) of this work.

To redeem this post with content related to podcast audiobooks, I'll just mention that Scott Siegler's third podcast novel, "Infection", has started broadcasting; you can subscribe from http://www.scottsigler.net/ Also, I believe Miette's Bedtime Podcast has been mentioned before, but hasn't made it into the listings. (It has just celebrated it's first anniversary; the only reason for not mentioning it at the time Story Spieler was suggested is that the first podcasts had some awkward production problems). Story Spieler also has a second web page at http://www.storyspieler.com/ with a number of their collected stories. This is a semi-permanent listing, which rotates contents. Examples: the H.G. Wells Time Machine stories, Oscar Wilde's The Canterville Ghost, Kipling's Just So Stories, Sholom Aleichem short stories, various Hans Christian Andersen stories, etc. are presently available at that site. There's also Craphound -- The Literary Works of Cory Doctorow at http://www.craphound.com/podcast.php (or the feedburner site at: http://feeds.feedburner.com/doctorow_podcast ). "I, Robot" is a finalist for the British Science Fiction Award and the Locus Award for Best Novelette. "Anda's Game" (from January) appeared in the Best American Short Stories 2005 collection.

We've just started podcasting our free audiobook of the month so I thought I'd mention that here. This month's selection is The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. Here's the link to the page on our site where you can listen or subscribe:

http://www.learnoutloud.com/Podcast-...-Podcast/18209

You can also find it by searching for "free audio book" in iTunes.
