on itunes, i can choose the shuffle button on any music selection i make, as to whether i want random play or not. i can not find how to do this on my ipod. or does this option of random play not exist on the ipod. i find it hard to believe, since i think this would be the preferred way of listening to a large selection of songs, for most people.

Welcome to the boards!
If you are talking about shuffling a playlist or certain artist , etc, it can be done. go under settings and then go to shuffle. then set it to songs or artists to your preference, and you should be set.
If you are talking about shuffling all songs in your music library, the option should be right there at the bottom. if it isnt go under setting and then menu. then scroll to shuffle and click yes.
