its not the main computer for it. I want to put it in disk mode, add a file, then transfer it to my home computer where the main is.
It looks like I can only change it to disk mode from home.

Yes, I think your right, that you can only change it to disk mode from its home computer. Personally, I always keep my iPod in disk mode, because you never know when it will come in handy. Its not that much of a pain to eject your iPod every time you connect it.

ejecting isnt even *that* important. its only important if you have the shuffle set to use write caching (meaning that when you transfer things, it doesnt necessarily transfer at that time, the computer does it when it wants to). the shuffle should be set not to use disk caching automatically, and you do not need to use the eject feature. just unplug it.
to check this yourself,
-right click on the shuffle in windows explorer.
-choose properties
-hardware tab
-choose the ipod again
-click porperties button again
-policies tab
if you read the discription under "optimize for quick removal", it says you do not need to use the safetly remove hardware option.
