I know from what I've read here they aren't, but for some reason I want to believe it.

Better in what way? The aesthetics, their sound, their isolation..?
The sound is the same. The same driver, components, etc. are used in both, no difference. The isolation is the same; same eartips and shape. The only difference is the aesthetics; the cloth pouch and shiny chrome..

I wonder which store that was...? All of the major electronics/computer chain stores (i.e. Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, Comp USA, etc.) have rather deserving reputations for sales personnel whose deficient product knowledge scarcely hinders them from telling customers whatever it takes to coax open their wallets. Perhaps the store would be willing to let you sample both and A/B them so that you could tell for yourself whether they are identical or not.

Bay Bloor Radio...a good home theatre store who specializes in high end electronics from Sennheiser to Denon, etc.
They said the EX71 had 'much better quality'

I know of BBR, but haven't bought from them before. I used Brack Electronics instead for my home theatre setup as I wasn't impressed with their prices.
Seems like someone tried to pull a sales-job on you..
