I just received the Sony Fontopia MDR-EX81/SL in white, from audiocubes.com -- as far as I know the white SL version is not yet available retail in North America. A couple of impressions:

-- The more I listen to the Sonys, the worse the Apple earbuds sound - the sound on the latter seems "flatter" and more compressed by comparison. The isolation of the Sony earbuds certainly is a great help, with a deeper bass and more detailed midrange. However, with EQ set to "off," the treble on the Sonys is too aggressive (especially for Classical music; I've even noticed some distortion listening to high soprano voices, for example) and the sound seems too polarized between treble and bass. I've found that I get the best, most natural sound with EQ set to "Treble Reducer".

-- At the same volume level set on the iPod, the Sonys are somewhat *softer* than the Apple earbuds. This means that for many tracks I have to push the volume up to around 80% to get a moderate volume level. I figure I will need to adjust everything in my library to compensate.

-- The uneven cord is hard to get used to. The left earphone takes most of the cord's weight, resulting in a light downward "tugging" which is a little annoying. Is the cord supposed to hang down *behind* the shoulder and under the arm? Or over the shoulder and straight down? I find that the short cord is a little *too* short, while adding the extension makes it a little too long. I've also tried rigging the cord as a "Y" by using a twist tie, which seems to work OK, but looks a little strange.

I'd be interested to hear others' impressions of these headphones...

I bought the Ety 6i's... and sent thm back. Bought these Sony's and I'm keeping them. Better definition than the Apple stocks, less mud. The Ety's had no bass whatsoever. I'm happy.

I have the EX51s which are identical to yours except black, and a single cord.

The cord is rather annoying, even when you place it "correctly," i.e. around the neck. The left side still drags the right side's cord over and must be adjusted every once in awhile.

I also noticed I had to increase the volume to around 80% to get a decent listening loudness. What exactly did you have in mind with regard to "adjusting everything in your library to compensate?"

I find them to be extremely comfortable, they are the only phones I can honestly say I can barely feel in my ears. I could probably sleep with them if I were so inclined.

If you notice, at the cord "split" area one side's cord originates from the bottom of the split junction. I don't know why Sony designed it this way as it causes stress on that cord and you will eventually notice the cord discoloring and wearing away at that point. I would probably reinforce it a bit with tape or something. Also there seems to be reports of wire failure near the earpieces if you pull them out by the cord frequently.

I meant going into iTunes and manually adjusting the volume of all of my albums up a notch (which could be time-consuming, since they're all already adjusted at different levels).

Everytime I put a new song in iTunes I just select all tracks, get info and boost all of their volumes to +100%. It comes out pretty good.

Well, it's back to the earbuds. Today the left earphone started crackling and then shut off altogether. I hope audiocubes will replace these things!
