Though not as good sounding as the less expensive Etymotic ER-6i, the E3C is close.
shures get 4/5, etys get 5/5.

I believe thats for a value rating.
In any case I think it massively depends on your preference: the Etys are more detailed, more audiophile, whereas the Shures are more fun and punchy.
I have not read about the ER6is much, but I personally have been very very happy with the E3s.
I would put them in a rough order as E2s -> ER6is -> E3 -> ER4 -> E4 -> E5 in terms of Etys vs. Shures. Check out Head-fi.org for more information and very detailed reviews.

whats unclear about "though not as good sounding as the less expensive er-6i, the e3c is close"?
heres a thread from head-fi that has a bit more to it than many of the e3 v. er-6i threads

i think many of the people haven't tried both (i haven't either), but it really depends on your music preference (how you like to hear it). i dont think its wrong to say that almost everyone thinks the er-6i is more accurate than the e3

From my experience the ety's deliver a drier audio experience, clear and crip but lacking punch. The shures give a more flowing experience with a bit more bass defiantion.

i do like the shure design more than the etymotic but i've heard they can really hurt your ears or be uncomfortable. though the etymotic is more fragile and i don;t like the clear plastic design... on amazon the etymotic is slightly cheaper but i still don;t know.

I've own both the Etymotic ER6i and the ER4P/S, the ER6i is great, but the ER4P/S is incredible/awe-inspiring.
That being said I would think "most," people would prefer the Shure's since they have a "funner," sound signature.

I haven't bothered to purchase any of the Etymotic earphones due to the "Lack of bass". Etymotics are very detailed and therefore would go well with classical music imho. People who like rock/rap music should be looking at the Shure range and the Westone UM2's.
As for the "Etymotic ER-6i's vs. Shure E3c's" it depends on your style of music. I would choose the E3c's over the ER-6i's any day because of these things...
i) Shure E3c's has the "Over the ear" design which is very comfortable and reduces microphonics.
ii) Shure E3c's come with a wider range of tips.
iii) Shure E3c's are much more sturdier than the ER-6i's.
iv) Shure has a full 2 year warranty compared to Etymotics 90-day warranty (Which does extend to 1 year through online registration).
v) The Shure E3c's look better.
Hope that helped you. ;)
