(in summary for those who don't wanna read everything)
1. iPod stops working.
2. I try to update and/or restore it by following apples articles (disk mode etc..)
3. iPod resets itself and goes back to the folder with exclaimation point from disk mode when it's connected to my computer
4. Because of it resetting itself, the updater software says "Cannot mount iPod" and I can't update or restore the ipod
5. The diagnostics programs will not complete
6. I don't know if I should spend the 60$ to try to get it fixed over the phone by tech support or should I risk the 100$ charge if it's not a hardware problem when I request warranty service.
Thanks!
Any ideas, questions, comments, help?
I bought a 4G 40gig iPod around January. Love the thing. Used it all the time, got a case for it, never dropped it or damaged it in any way including liquid damage etc.. All the sudden the iPod started skipping song by song on its own when I was playing it one day. I reset it and it seemed to work fine. A few days later the same thing happened. I reset it and it did not work fine.
I started getting a picture of a folder with an exclamation point. Also - the ipod makes some kind of weird whining spinning noise when I turn it on after a few days to try to fix it again. I breifly talked to tech support and told them to forget it when I found out there was going to be a 50$ or 60$ charge. The tech support guy said, "I can tell you it's not a hardware problem" when I told him about the folder with exclamation point.
I turned to the apple support site for help. I followed the articles by putting the iPod into disk mode to reset the iPod. I put it into disk mode and then plug it into my computer and load up the updater software. My iPod then shows the "Do Not Disconnect" for about 10-30 seconds. It then just resets itself and the Updater software says "Cannot Mount iPod" I can't update or restore it, none of the articles help. I've also went into diagnostics mode and tried to run some of the hard drive tests. The tests do not say if they pass or fail, they just freeze up and quit reading the hard drive so I have to reset the iPod.
So my iPod is currently a 400$ paperweight. I'm debating whether I should send it in to apple and have them fix it, risking the 100$ charge if it wasnt actually a hardware issue, or should I suck it up and pay the 60$ for unlimited tech suport and make sure it's not a software problem before I send it to apple? Any suggestings or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
