I have a pc running Windows XP and use my iPod mini with iTunes. My computer, however, doesn't have enough space to store all that I would like in my library.

I need to purchase an external hard drive to connect to my 2.0 USB port (my iPod uses the other port).

However, I'm finding all kinds of people are having trouble with using external hard drives to store their library.

If it's possible, could someone please suggest a decent sized (160?) external hard drive that they have experienced in my situation and that works for them? Then I could look into buying online somewhere and my problem would be solved.

Thanks!
-Will

Why not just add an extra Hard drive to the inside of your PC then put all the music on that. Stick with the name brands Seagate, Maxtor or Western Digital and you will be okay.

Will - here's the most cost-effective ones:

Mini:

Mini Case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145330) + 60GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822146022)

3.5" Drive Case (http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145355) + 160GB (http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144362)

Good luck

I love my ACOM 160 GB drive it works great! Sometimes though when you disconnect your itunes library loses the files and you sometimes have to point everything back to the hd.

Or you could buy a hard drive (like a 200GB) and get an external hard drive enclousure. Then you end up saving some money because getting a 200GB drive on sale is cheap like $106 on sale then the enclousure is $20 so you spend $126 on a portable drive. Mine cost about $200 and it is only 160GB.

I have two external hard drives for iTunes - one for Mac and one for the PC and I haven't had any problems with either. One's a Maxtor 160G and the other is a Lacie 250G.

I was given a Maxtor One Touch 160GB External HDD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144222) this past Christmas. A few months ago the 60GBs on my iBook was not cutting it for my music library and so moved it all to the Maxtor, which gives plenty of room for the library to grow, and now have 16GBs to spare on the iBook. Haven't had any problems at all with it.

I use a 30 gig laptop, so the way I solved the problem you are having is that I bought an 160 gig Western Digital HD and a PPA aluminum enclosure with Firewire and USB 2.0. It works great.
As long as it's connected the PC will see it along with your iPod.
The advantage to the HD / enclosure approach is that it's usually cheaper than an external. And it looks good too. Here's mine. (http://ppa-usa.com/product_pages/enclosures/1943.htm)

buy.com seems to have some good deals on external hard drives.
like a lacie (Design by F. A. Porsche) 250 gig for $170. sounds snazzy.
the 160 gig version is about $120.
or go all the way and get the lacie 500 gig for $400!

I recently purchased an internal Western Digital 120gb drive, and have noticed that iTunes is having difficulty playing songs from the new location (little skips or popping sounds thoughout playback).

Have any of you external drive guys experienced this?

Hey all.

Here's another vote for the Lacie 250G.
I've been using it solely for iTunes (80GB library so far!!!) since February and have *not* had any problems. *knocks on the wood*

Very quick updating speed, etc also (and it looks really nice)

I 've run out of space on my 30GB VAIO and got a Wolverine 80GB external hard drive. How do I transfer iTunes from my CD drive to the G drive without having to remove iTunes from the C drive, reinstall it onto Wolverine and import CD's again?

I was told to get Ghost software, or something like it, to automatically back things up whenever I use the computer. Please help. I've never done this sort of thing before and I have a lot of downloaded records that I haven't yet backed up anywhere else and I would be very unhappy about losing those in a transer/reinstallation.

Thanks so much for your help!
