novice questions

i have an Ipod phot 60GB running windows XP for Itunes. I have a USB2 cable going into a standard USB port. The Ipod didn't come with a firewire dock - if i buy one, will it transfer files quicker than USB2 to USB?
Can i link to a stereo via the dock?
The volume on the Ipod unit is low, how do i easily increase it without having to set the volume higher for every single song in Itunes?
Which is the tried and tested best import setting? i'm currently using MP3 192KBs

1 Firewire is quicker (make sure you have firewire on your pc)
2 Yes, (you can also link the headphone jack to a stereo but it sounds terrible imho)
3 don't understand the Q.
4 You should take one song and rip it at various levels and find the one you like the most. remember, the higher the bit rate, the more gb's it uses.
