I've only had my ipod few days and have converted most of my music to mp3 already to play through my xbox ... so mostly I've just been dragging folders into the library and letting it autosync - I've got plenty of space on both sides so its not an issue ...

I've used tag and rename to tidy all my ID3 tags up and file names match the id3 tag, so all sweet .. except ...

whats been ripping my undies is when I add a compiltion album - such as a soundtrack - and itunes decides it can rename all the artists to 'various' - or sometimes 'various artists' - where the hell does it get this from? and where can I turn it off ...

I've read a lot of other threads talking about problems with compilation albums, but they all seem to just talk about about how they get a seperate entry for every artist .. I wish!

This is really creating a lot of double work for me, I tidy the album up (tag and rename will get the info from freedb on a mp3 list - I havent worked out how to get itunes to do this other than when Im ripping a cd) - and then I have to reenter all the artists again in itunes .. very sucki moto!!

would love some help - noticed apple doesnt mention how to turn this off either ...

in some threads people say its great having itunes act as a database for all your music - sure, I'd agree if it just did what it was told, as it stands it just adds in a layer of error :/

Thanks

I think it gets the info from CDDB. If you disagree with the auto-tagging that iTunes does I'm not too sure there's a lot you can do about it, other than submit different details to CDDB. You could manually change the tags once they're in iTunes I think. Are you letting iTunes "keep the music folder organised"? If so, and you are happy tagging/naming/organising your files outside of iTunes (as I do), you may wish to turn off that option.
I use other programs for ripping/tagging/naming and only when I'm happy do they get added to iTunes.

it renames the field with "manage files" on or off ..

it also renames them instantly, like faster than it can look up CDDB I suspect, so not sure if its doing it from there or not - particularly as when I tryand manually CDDB it tells me it wont do it for something it didnt Rip itself ....

Honestly this program is like a 3 year old - I wont I wont, its not mine!

mmm that maybe the answer, I kinda like itunes, but might have to look at one of the alternatives thats a bit better behaved :/

Make sure you uncheck the "Part of a Compilation" box when ripping.
