I think that the font should be bigger by default.

Agreed... and red is not the easiest color to see. Make it a little darker, or user configurable!

Yeah, I like the look it gives off, but I'm blind;)
You could always use a browser that features a zoom function like Opera!!
You can zoom in as much as 1000% then!!!

Most browsers except IE on Windows allow for users to resize fonts.

Actually IE in Windows does scale fonts, It's under View\Text size then there's 5 settings from smallest to largest. Alternately you can hold down Ctrl and zoom in and out with your mouse wheel.

It only scales fonts that are set to relative text sizes, but if fonts are set in pixel sizes (which is best for making sure everythng is where you want it and not overlapping) like they are for this page, it won't resize, whereas all other browsers will resize fonts set in pixel sizes.

If you want to resize fonts like the ones on this page, you can set IE to "ignore font sizes specified on web pages". The option is under Tools - Internet Options - Accessibility in IE 6.
However, this option makes some pages look like garbage, so be ready to change back and forth as necessary (i.e. don't forget that you made this change!).

In IE 5 or 6 on a Windows PC, go to "View" then go to "Text Size" and set it how you like it. I just did it myself and the settings of "Larger" mimics the font size used by XSorbit.
Back in reality, I third or fourth or whatever point I'm at that the default font size is painfully small. It's a global option in vBulletin. Work with us, here. ;)

The bug in IE 6 for Windows is well (http://metatalk.metafilter.com/mefi/2799#55863)-documented (http://www.zeldman.com/daily/0502c.html).

But the problem is bigger than just how fonts look on Windows machines. Windows browsers tend to set resolution to 96ppi, while Mac browsers still set them at the old standard of 72ppi. Thus, sizing for Windows makes stuff look very, very large on Macs.
There is no universal solution, in other words.
Ya, or, you could just change the vbulletin template. ;)

My goodness, you're stubborn. Let me see if I can explain this in an understandable way:
If the font sizes are changed to suit your preferences, (regardless of how they're changed, either via the CSS stylesheet or the vBulletin template,) then other users will be inconvenienced. There is no way to please eveyone with regard to font sizes.
If we change the font sizes to suit users of IE 5/6 for Windows, then users of every other browser will have font size problems. There's no way to fix the problem so that everyone is satisfied. Until makers of browsers get their acts together and make standards-compliant browsers, that is.
We long for that day.

Out of curiousity...what's the browser spread for people accessing this place? I guess your logic holds water if this site has a majority of visitors that utilize Safari...
You're right that you can't make everyone happy all the time...wouldn't it make sense to make to implement something that benefits the majority of your users though?

The last poll I read on the old forums suggested that a slight majroity use Safari, and then IE, and then Netscape, and then Mozilla. But if you seperate this out in terms of browsers that have the text resize bug and browsers that don't then Safari, Netscape, Mozilla and IE for Mac users get grouped together, and in that case, it doens't make sense to cater to users of IE for Windows, since they're outnumbered quite a bit.
Still, we can always start a new poll, and see what people think. Toward that end, I'll lock this thread so that discussion will happen in the poll threads.
