If you uninstall the iPod Software (all of it, that include the MMJB iPod Plugin) can you at least see the iPod as a drive in My Computer?

If so, right click it and select format, then do a quick format of the drive.

Then try the updater. If it can't do the format, it means that your firewire can't make the connection.

i did the quick format but during the installation of the apple cd it ask to wait a few seconds for the ipod to recognize by the system...it just stay like that. should i cancel and continue with the set-up?

i've been having the same problem as well...

the only software i have installed is the 2.0.1 Updater, and nothing else.

i can see the iPod through my computer, i can drag and drop files to it, and i can format it successfully. but when i run the updater program, both "update" and "restore" are greyed out, and after opening the program, the window pauses for a while, then i get the error "can't mount ipod".

i got this error using the soundblaster audigy firewire port...

so then i tried a 4-port PCI firewire card that came packaged with my motherboard. same problem still, i can see the ipod in my computer, can drag/drop files to it, i can format it, but can't run the updater still.

so THEN i bought the dock connecter to usb 2.0 + firewire connector, thinking that if i'm not having any success with firewire, i'll try usb.

well...GUESS WHAT?~!@~11

i still have the exact same problem/error using usb as well. magnifacent!

Have the same problem with my brand new 20GB iPod that I got today. I can transfer files through EphPod to but later on I can't start the iPod so I can play music!! So I guess it works as a portable driver, but not as a mp3-player.....:=)
After almost 10 hours is't still not working!

Folks:

I'm at a loss to help you all out here. Most often, if you can format the drive, and you can write files to it, then it means that there isn't a problem w/your connection. If that's the case then you should be all means be able to restore it using the Updater program.

I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on. I have seen 2 situations where folks have had connection problems recently and a replacement iPod solved their problems. I'm wondering if there is a bad batch of iPods out there. Somewhat unlikely given the fact that folks here are from all over the world. But none of the usual tricks are working....

The only thing I haven't mentioned is firewire mode. But I doubt this will work:

Do a reset (menu + pause/play until the Apple logo comes up)
At the Apple logo press the FF and REW buttons, until OK to Disconnect comes up, then connect the iPod.
Try the Updater

Again, I wish I had something else to help you with, but I've exhausted every trick I know

I'm from Sweden, but I far as I know the iPod is being shipped directly from Asia somewhere when we order it from the Apple website. So a bad batch is still a possiblity maybe.

But we all appreciate your effort to help us! :=)
