I had to reformat my 1 gig shuffle. When the process completed, the program told me the shuffle's capacity was :

990 MB

I was under the impression 1 gig=1024 MB.

Do I have a few bad sectors?

Flash chips & HDs are marked as 1000MB being a GB, instead of 1024MB. Therefore 990MB sounds reasonable.

I believe it would be 976MB, but I'm curious to hear from any 1 gig owners what it actually is...

I forget what it was when I originally installed my shuffle. I will be a little upset if I have lost capacity. If anyone else w/ a 1 gig shuffle could chime in, it would be appreciated.

When you format the Shuffle, the figure you started with drops. The shelf life also decreased the memory capacity. Yes...over time, memory just...deterioates. Not by a lot, mind you.

Don't worry, be happy! I bought mine when they first came out and have used it constantly. Formatted many times, changed program everyday, no loss of capacity so far. I have 230 songs on it right now, using 990 MB, 424 KB available.

This is complete hogwash. You do not lose memory capacity over time.
