View Full Version : I'll tell you what I want to do, you tell me which in-car solution!

My head is spinning from the overwhelming number of in-car solutions. I have an 03 VW GTI 20th Anniversary Edition. Here's what I want to do:

-Be able to use the controls on the ipod. I don't really use playlists much, I just use the ipod to store all my CD's and want to flip through them like a CD changer. I need the controls.

-Being able to control some functions through the factory radio would be nice, but not required.

-I'd like to be able to charge the ipod through the kit. The main idea is that I don't have to plug more than one cable in when I dock the ipod.

-It would be nice to have a real "dock" that I can just plop the ipod into with one hand, rather than a cable I have to have hanging there to plug in every time. Not a MUST HAVE feature, but ideal.

-As for mounting, I have a Panavise mount already installed. I bolted a universal cell phone holder on it that is working perfect for now, but again, would like more of a "dock" if possible.

-It is critical that I get a unit with the BEST possible sound quality available. I spent lots of time ripping all my CD's using Exact Audio Copy and LAME MP3 encoder to get full CD quality, and don't want a cheap adapter with any interference.

Picky, PICKY!!! I know! But if I can't do it RIGHT, I'd rather not do it at all. So lets hear a combination of all your experiences and knowledge, and help me get jamming for the summer! Thanks in advance!

Oh, and is there a kit that gets the backlight to stay on whenever docked? That'd be another feature I'd make if I were an engineer!

Regarding the iPod's backlighting....go into Settings on the iPod, Backlight Timer, and choose Always On. It is not an automatic feature when you dock the iPod, but at least Apple gave us the option to make it stay on.

I have the Dension ICE Link 1.1 kit installed in my '03 Accord and it works excellent. Any kit that uses your CD Changer port connection will give you the best possible sound because it will be a direct line-input from the iPod's line-output from the Dock Connector. Avoid any FM Transmitter or Cassette Adapters.

You can check out the Dension ICE Link at http://icelink.densionusa.com/, or Neo product found at http://www.mp3yourcar.com. Both products use the CD Changer interface. Research both and make a decision based on your needs. If you don't care about controlling the iPod with your headunit, simply add an Aux Input Converter from http://www.logjamelectronics.com and hook it up with an Apple iPod Dock. Both the Dension and Neo use Aux Input Converters combined with their specialized hardware and Dock Cable to make your headunit control the iPod.

I've looked around and cant seem to find a for sure answer, but will this work in my 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse with the new 30Gb Ipod Photo? I need to have the best sound possible and this seems to be it, but as far as I can tell it doesnt seem to be available for my car or ipod.

Well, I did a bunch of research and finally set my heart on the Dension v1.1, it seems perfect. Only one SMALL PROBLEM: they don't make it or sell it anymore!!! So now I don't know what to do. I don't like the Plus since I can't use the ipod controls with it and have to use playlists. Guess I'll keep looking! :(
