Ok. Here's the story. I'm a pilot and I had my crew chiefs rig a wire in order to listen to the iPod through the intercomm system (ICS) while we're flying. Believe me, it breaks up the monotony.

Anyhow, I placed my Gen 2 iPod in the map case next to the right seat in the aircraft. Little did I know, there was about an INCH of water in the map case. Went and did my preflight, then came back and got ready to hook up the iPod when I realized that it had been sitting in an inch of water for about 20 minutes. I had it in the iSee clear case, and the grey soft pouch you get in the box. The iPod would not, and still will not turn on. I'm afraid to crack it open because I don't want to void my warranty, if it is still in fact valid.

I had turned my iPod in some time ago at an Apple store because it took a fall from the top of a refrigerator and I got the folder icon with an exclaimation point on it. They replaced it with another Gen 2 iPod......... the one I sent to a watery grave. The only thing I have not tried yet was plugging the firewire into the wall and trying to put it through a charging cycle. I am currently on a deployment in Okinawa, Japan, and don't have an Apple store to run to at the moment.

So.... if someone out there has gotten their iPod wet and figured out a way how to fix it, please let me know. My songs are not lost, because I copied all 10 gigs onto my laptop before I deployed. I hate flying without music, so please help if you can.

Thanks

Hey there, well, something similar happened to me, mine landed in a (clean) toilet (long story), but it wasn't in there for 20 minutes needless to say.

It didn't work either, but when I got home I hooked it up to my PC and bingo it worked fine.

So...you might want to try connecting it to the AC adaptor. That's basically the same as connecting it to the PC (forces reboot).

See what happens......

Leave it to dry for a few days, it might well work like Adam's.

Definately let it dry for a couple days before you plug it in. You don't want any moisture to short circuit when you plug it in. Then it will really be screwed.

One of my "mates" pushed me in a pool when I had my phone in my pocket, it got fully submerged and wouldnt work at all. What I did was take it apart, lie it on a table, then very carefully with a blowdryer on the lowest setting and from some distance away carefully blow dry the parts. Be very careful when doing this, if its too hot or too close you'll fry some of the electronics.

I'd probably leave it for a few days first though and see if it just dries out by itself.

Sorry, this is not iPod story, but related to the topic. I bought to my son a set of remote controlled boat and car. The boat was specially designed to be protected from water, as the car wasn't. Of course, my son sank the car to test, and it stopped working, however after drying for a day, it started working again. However, it didn't happened with the boat, because probably it's tough to get it dried, when water came in. So, sometime water unprotected devices can handle that better, than especially designed.

My friend did a similar thing, he spilt a glass of water in his notebook, so he left it off for 3 days, on day 4 it was working.

** UPDATE To My iPOd Disaster **

I left it alone for about a week, then tried to turn it on. NOTHING. Then, I plugged the firewire into the wall adapter to try to charge it, and it DID!! So now I've got power to the iPod. I tried connecting it to the computer, but it would not mount. So I tried forcing firewire mode, etc, but it wasn't working. I hit the Play/Paus and Menu buttons, then held FF RW buttons to try to get the "Ok To Disconect". After about an hour, I got it to do that.

I check in the "About" area, and the iPod reported 1.2 out of 10 igs available, with NO SONGS on it. Hit a bunch more buttons and now the iPod tells me: File format: unknown, space available: 4445564565 (some random long number).

I can't get the iPod to mount to the updater, and Ephpod isn't picking it up. I tried Right Clicking it from My Computer and tried to quick format, but it won't.

Is my iPod done??? I hope not. I won't be back to the States until December, and I don't think there's an Apple store on Okinawa. And if there is, surely they would have iPods with incorect adapters.......

Any thoughts???

Hmm... I found the Okinawa centre on the Japanese Apple website. Don't know if it'll help, though.

The trouble with water damage is that it is very visible when you return the product and innocently demand a new one under warranty.

My brother dropped his mobile in a pint of beer and not suprisingly it ceased to function so he sent it back under warranty and asked for a new one. They sent him a reply saying , "Sorry sir you seem to have dropped in in your beer, beer damage is not covered"
