Hey all!

Having ordered a 20 gig I Pod on 18th Sept, and realising it will be about a month before i get it [gutted as goin oh jols this w-end, at least i can get it off my mind!] i need to convert my cd's into mp3's.

I am a Pc user on XP, what is the best software to use to rip all my cd's?

Cheers peeps, great site!!

Use CDEX if your new to it all, it provides good functionality with a very easy 1-click interface.

Search google for CDEX

And who told you it will be a month? My 20gb i order on the 21st sept, and in the email it told me it will be shipped before the 03/10 and allow 5 days delivery. So i make that 2 weeks.

or try media center 9 by j river.

very good integrated system, so you can rip, tag, play, and upload to the pod all from one app that can be skinned to look like a certain mac app! theres a 30 day trial available in the MC9 forum, and it is the only pc app so far that handles rating, play counts, and last played dates. I've just started using it properly and its fantastic!

I always preach the benefits of EAC and LAME for high quality rips, but unfortunately, though the end results will be of the highest quality, the process is not 'one click' at all, and requires a bit of configuration first.

However, if you're willing to do a little hunting for some nice sounding MP3s, then follow this guide:

just from having read on the general discussion board, the times for delivery seems pretty all over, so if i think it will take a month and it comes in 2 weeks, i will be a happy boy!! :p

Cheers for the help by the way, sure i will be posting plenty more up here once the beast arrives

music match comes with the pod. I will admit that it was probably programed by a monkey, but the cd ripping feature is nice. It tages and rips at any bitrate, I have 100% of my files ripped from there and they are fine. Save yourself 40$ and go with the simple easy truth!

Really, if you can't tell the difference between 128 and anything higher then consider yourself lucky: the out-of-the-box experience should be sufficient, and you'll have more space to fill with smaller mp3s :D

i know i am gonna be shot down for being a numpty, but.....

does the software that comes with the Ipod transfer the audio cd in disc drive straight to the ipod?? [ie without having to change to mp3 on hard drive]

why i am asking for ripping software is so that i can get nearly all my cd's made into mp3's and stored ready on my hard drive, as i figure this could take ages??

thus when Ipod arrives, i can whack a load of tunes straight onto it.

am a total novice to music formats, so can u clear this without laughing too hard!!

bells0: you're not being a numpty, er...well, I don't know what one is, so you might be one, but I'm not sure so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. ;)

Welcome to the 'lounge by the way.

First off, as you've read, MMJB, the software that comes w/the iPod will allow you to Rip to MP3 and then upload those MP3s to the iPod.

Now, also as you've read, that software pretty much, um, well isn't good. ;)

Check out the Software Compendium (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2286) for a list of ripping programs as well as alternatives to MMJB for uploading.

I second the MC9 recommendation as it supports digital secure ripping and uses the LAME encoder so you have the equivalent of EAC/LAME but you get the benefits of having your tunes automatically added to your library, analyzed for volume levelling etc.

Also, it's a great tagger and perfect for uploading to the iPod.

Ok I just switched from CDex to EAC/LAME, I also switched from CBR 128 KBps to [192 KBps] VBR --alt-preset standard %s %d.

Currently I am reripping the CDs/songs I ripped so far, about 1,5 GB cos I do indeed hear a difference between to the two formats.

Ah well now I know, should have read still a bit more than I already did...better late than never shall we say?!

Thanks jogloran for that tut link, it helped.
