Well, the difference is that his is brand new and your talking about a refurbished one. Considering the new ones retail for $400, $325 is a decent price.

However, his S&H is pretty high, and since the 15Gigs have been replaced by the 20Gig, the price might be a little high. However, it is still brand new.

Anyone paying more than refurb price ($279 incl s&h) must be mad, and is doing their bit to keep prices artificially high.

Yes it's 'New' - but you're buying from an unknown individual, not Apple.

He says it's not a refurb he's just bought for $279 (that's how they come, shrink-wrapped in the proper box), but where's the guarantee?

If it's not a refurb, then it hasn't been soak-tested, and if it is, you're paying way too much. And what comeback have you? And when does the warranty date from?

There is a reason that second hand (even shrink-wrapped, new looking second hand) costs less than fully guaranteed refurbs from the manufacturer.

Anyone paying more than $250 incl S&H needs their bumps feeling.

It's brand new like you would buy in the store. I didn't say it was refurbished. The refurbished ones from Apple are gone. And Apple will add on whatever your local sales tax is. Refurbished ones might be scratched up also. It's still in the plastic wrap because it has never been opened and used. The warranty would be for one year after it gets registered. If you're not interested, then please don't buy it. Don't slam people for trying to sell something.

Fact: Refurbs aren't scratched up, they come with a new battery and a new enclosure (front and back). Refurbs come in a sealed, shrink-wrapped box, just like new ones. Refurbs come from Apple Inc. - a reputable company against whom one has some comeback. Refurbs are extensively tested and have a no quibble guarantee. The refurb price includes S&H.

I didn't say your 'Pod was a refurb - just pointing out that you can't prove that it isn't, just as you can't prove that it wasn't registered months ago, unless you're willing to provide a dated receipt. Moreover, while the warranty is based on registration, if you kept it unopened for more than one year and then tried to register, you'd be in for a bit of a shock, because it's also based on serial number.

You're probably an honest chap, and probably no-one needs to have any worries about you - but there can be no guarantee, and so any second hand iPod (even a shrink-wrapped one) is, by definition, worth less than such a refurb.

I'm merely pointing out to fellow iPodders that a second hand iPod doesn't represent great value if it costs more than a refurb. That's not slamming you, it's helping my virtual chums here at the lounge, and if you were a buyer rather than a seller, you'd thank me for it.

I can understand where you're coming from - you want to maximise the return you get by selling this Pod, and I don't blame you. But at the same time this board is a community, and in a community, members help each other out and offer advice. That's the disadvantage of advertising here. My advice, for what it's worth, is that $345 for a second hand 15 GB iPod is way too expensive (you're asking $66 more than Apple ask for a refurb).

But you'll probably find some sucker who's in a hurry and will pay you more than its worth. But I'll bet you'd get a sale quicker if you were a bit less greedy and a bit more realistic.

A non-refurb will have greater resale value down the line then a refurb. Refurbs have a stigma that makes them less appealing to most people, justified or not. If the seller can provide a recent sales reciept that shows that the unit is not a refurb and references such as EBAY, then he can expect to recieve more then what apple charges for a refurb. Also, apple is no longer selling 3G refurbs and even if they did there would be a 2-3 week wait for delivery. Plus some people prefer to have a virgin IPOD.

A better comparison would be the 15GB unit that is sold at jandr.com for $355 shipped. The offer for $315 sounds reasonable to me.

Just for the record I have ordered a 3G 15GB and 2G 10GB REFURBS from apple and dont regret the decision.

A non-refurb will have greater resale value....

I'm sorry, but in my view that's balls. Once any pod is being sold by a private individual, it will all be down to condition, spec, and warranty remaining.

A refurb from Apple will always be worth more than a second hand pod.

Don't trust me, do a search on Ebay and find out for yourself.

I myself by refurbs all the time but I always get a little less for them once I sell them as opposed to a non-refurb. Refurbs are like salvaged cars. People think twice about getting them.

Anyways we shouldn't be talking about refurbs. He has a non-refurb and he's item should only be compared to other non-refurbs. It would be foolish for him to sell he's IPOD for 250$ as others have suggested when whoever buys it can turn around and sell it for $300+ on ebay.
In this scenerio who is taking advantage of who?

And for anyone who is selling new 15GB IPODS for $250, i'll buy 10.

The other thing to bear in mind is that most of the Apple refurbs at the moment are not refurbs at all. They are brand new unsold stock of what is an obsolete model.
