My brother and I are having quite a bit of trouble with our iPods. He's got a U2 and a machine running XP. It was recently re-formatted to windows, he was using it on a mac before. I've got a 2nd Gen Mini iPod on a machine running XP pro, and the weird thing is that mine WAS working, but now it's not.
Neither of our PC's are mounting/recognizing our iPods when we connect them via USB. I can't seem to figure out what the problem is here. I've reinstalled software and such, and neither of them are working.
Anyone got any ideas?

Have you used the updater and restored the iPod? This will erase the iPod HD.

The thing is, the computer won't recognize the U2 iPod as being connected, therefore, I cannot restore it.

Does it show up in my computer? If so, what letter is it showing as?

U2 iPod does not show up in my computer.
Mini one doesn't either.

have you tried connecting to a firewirewire port? if it worked, then the problem would be on the USb drivers. also make sure you have a checkmark on iPod Service on MSCONFIG. hope it works!
Check the BIOS to see that the USB function is activated, althouth a re-format shouldn't have affected the BIOS settings it's worth a look.

It sounds an awful lot like a USB problem. Make sure you can see USB devices. Plug a keyboard, mouse or other USB device directly into one of the machine's USB ports. If it doesn't appear then something's not right with either the software or the hardware ports have died.
Hardware does die and nothing prevents it from happening on two different machines at the same time but it's *unlikely*.
If the other USB devices DO show up then I'd wonder about your other cabling and/or hubs that might be involved. Some USB hubs are notoriously unreliable. I've had some belkin units drive me crazy with intermittent issues, but I'm sure other vendors have similar troubles.
