Help me! I just ordered a 4g iPod photo and while it's not here yet, I know that I will need to format it for use with windows. I have a playable but semi-disabled 3g that I could update using the older Updater software in Windows98, but I was never able to use the more recent updates because they require 2000/XP. I've been using a firewire connection with no problems.

I know that the older software I have won't work with the 4g. Is there any solution, a hack or something that will allow me to update my iPod without connecting to a computer with XP? I'm not quite ready to build a new computer and installing XP on this old one is out of the question.

I waited over an hour at the Apple store for someone at the "Genius" Bar only for him to tell me that Apple doesn't repair, only replaces, and with out of warranty costs I'm better off just getting a new one. How very convenient for Apple. My 3g's rewind button suddenly stopped working and I haven't even been using it, wearing the case and using the remote cord while I work. While attempting to see if I could do something, check if a connection was loose and whatnot, I partially ripped the flimsy connection from the screen to the iPod (it came off like a piece of scotch tape!). So, now, I have a very large iPod shuffle.

Theoretically, I could download the new updater file and store it on my broken iPod, take it to CompUSA when no one's looking and hope that they haven't disabled anything I need with the administrator tools. Copy the file to the computer, switch iPods and run the updater.

But there has to be a better way. I will have to update again, probably before I buy a new computer, and perhaps maybe there's something I can do to to make my computer just appear to be XP to the updaters cosmetically?
