Does anyone know where I might find NPR programs available for podcasting? I know On the Media has been available for a few months now, but I haven't been able to find any others. Does anyone know where I might look?

Thanks!

Many NPR shows have downloadable archived shows on their specific web sites. You can also get them through Audible, although that costs money.

Check out the KCRW site, they have quite a few programs available as pocasts, including the fantastic "le show".

I read elsewhere that KCRW's le Show has the music edited out. I don't know for sure. Its just what I read.

The Free downloads of Le Show at Audible are the complete show.

It wouldn't surprise me if music is edited out. The RIAA doesn't want anyone to hear a song without a royalty being paid.

Probably what you're looking for is Talk of the Nation, Morning Edition, etc. NPR won't podcast this stuff because they get money for 'casting it through Audible. There is a way to get it onto your iPod, but it involves a few steps. I can explain it if anyone is interested.

The most recent version of Le Show had plenty of incidental music and at least one full song, so that may not be true.

As bdb says, there is no shortage of ways to get NPR shows to your iPod. I use Audio Hijack, it's quite easy to set up on a timer and will record absolutely any kind of NPR stream or archived program to MP3, ID tag it, and then import it into iTunes. If you're on a PC there are probably lots of similarly great programs to use.

Quite simply: I use Net Transport to download it (getting the rtsp name is the hard part), and Realplayer to copy it to the iPod. This has the advantage that it doesn't involve real-time recording, so it can be done quite quickly.

The tricky part is getting the name of the RTSP stream.

I've been looking into this myself. Audible is a ripoff since I'm realistically not going to pay for what goes out for Free to the world. I'm really disappointed that "car talk" "wait wait don't tell me" etc are all unavailable. I really hope NPR gets its act together and put their entire lineup online. I assume they are thinking about this but who knows how long it will take?

So far I'm considering buying a cheap TV/FM tuner card or trying to figure out some sort of way to hook up an old receiver into my PC on a timer or something. Most solutions seem like a pain and cost money.

bdb, I had thought about trying a ripper but doesn't the rtsp name change constantly? I see that fargesh is recommending the same thing but does that work consistantly without having to worry about it? I really want something that's automatic and just downloads to wav weekly. I can script lame to convert it etc but beyond that I don't want to have to find the stream every single time.

Anyway I know this is a slightly old thread but I'd love to hear if anyone has any tips on the subject or an alternative place get NPR downloads.

Yes, the rtsp name does change constantly. I use this method because I only download certain interviews and/or parts of shows. It does take about 20 seconds of my time to get the URL.

If you want to get specific shows on a regular basis, the best way would be was fargesh described - find an NPR station that streams mp3 (kcrw.org?), and use a program that intercepts the stream and stores it to disk. Most will store it as mp3.
